Default Rodriguez Scrapped "Barbarella" Despite A $70 Million Budget Offer.

http://www.imdb.com/news/ni0774634/

Quote:
Moviemaker Robert Rodriguez has abandoned his remake of Jane Fonda's Barbarella - because the father of five couldn't bear the thought of shooting the film in Germany.

The Planet Terror director planned to make the action film with girlfriend Rose McGowan as the lead, but couldn't raise finance to make the movie in America.

And he hated the idea of spending so much time abroad, away from his children.

He tells MTV, "Germany offered us a $70 million budget, which would have been by far the biggest budget I ever would have had for a movie. But I had to shoot it in Germany and post it in Germany.

"Nothing against Germany, but I have five kids and I was like, 'God, I don’t know if we can do that. I don’t know if I can be away that long.'

"It was a real bummer. We had all this artwork and screen tests of what it would look like. It was a really cool, R-rated, sexy version of a Star Wars movie... It was gonna be really great."
I mentioned it on another thread so I wanted to put this out there.

This sucks. But it's ok because Rodriguez will always be bouncing cool ideas around.

Originally, when it pitched it to Universal, he wanted a $150 million budget for the film.

He isn't directing Red Sonja. He's only producing. I find it funny he ditches Barbarella because he doesn't want to leave his children but he leaves them and his wife so he could bang Rose McGowan.

I would not want to touch Marylin Manson!!!!!

As for Barbarella, it is a shame that he could not find the finance in America and now we may never see what may of been a really cool film, remake or not. Have to stick to watching Jane Fonda.

He demanded too much for it. No way in hell a $150 million dollar budget. $70 would have been fine.

If he could do it for 70 in Germany, then he could do it for 70 in America, with change as German wages and costs are higher. Total agreement with you.

If I was a Universal exec and Rodriguez asked for $150 million, my response would be; "Are you f***in' re****ed?" Because there's no way in hell a remake of Barbarella would make it's budget back if it costs $150 million. Maybe worldwide it'd make $150 million but that's a longshot in my opinion. No way. A budget with $70 million would be spot on. I could see that amount as just right. Now if he went to a FOX exec for Predators and asked for $150 million, I could see that because there's money there and I'm sure fans would see it.

Well that stinks. What's wrong with going to Deutschland anyway? As long as you keep Tom Cruise away, and ignore Uwe Boll, it's not that bad!

Yeah, German is a nice place. Lived in Southern Bavaria about two hours away from the French border.

Only if it's rated "R" like a Predator movie should be.

But he left them to bang Rose McGowan though, so his logic is irrelevent.

Sorry I'm not the biggest rose mcgowan fan. Even more so now that he's planning to use her in lead roles in his movies due to the fact he's banging her. I know it worked for Tim Burton, but his GF could act.
