Default to buy or not to buy

I am in the process of updating my entertainment equipment. What I have now, you would probably all laugh at. I know that I'm going to buy a 30-40" 720p LCD. I can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080p while in the store...other than by the price tag. So I was thinking of getting a cheaper TV and a BD player as well. The thing is, I have noticed a lot of bad reviews on all BD models....well more like all of the "affordable" BD players at least. Is it worth it to buy a BD player?

If I had a DVD player, would its output only be 480p? I am sort of thinking of just buying a nice DVD player and saving hundreds of dollars that could be spent going to the movies or more beer.

sorry if this was annoying to you gurus.

If you can't tell the diffference, why the question?

Your eyes should be the judge, nothing else.

What bad reviews?...I mean, everything has a hiccup of some type or another (usually user error in my book). There's no widespread piece of crap players that I'm aware of anyway, if you stay with a name brand like Samsung/Sony/Etc.., you'll be fine. I hear the prices are coming to <$200 (or soon will be).

Oh yeah, you're gonna get ROASTED for saying you want a 720 display...you've been warned

After I see a movie in the theatre, all I can think is I can't wait to see this on Blu Ray. So buy a 1080p TV and a Blu Ray player, and go to less movies in the theatre and drink cheaper beer.

Nothing wrong with getting a 720p TV (in my opinion) but I certainly wouldn't spend a dime on a "Nice DVD Player" when you can spend a little more and get a Blu-ray player.....

Just rent the discs

well a 720 display is way better than what I am watching now.

I mainly watch TV and about 1-2 movies per week.

I heard that cable TV cannot even put out 1080p resolution, so why would i get it? (this is a question...i'm not trying to be a jerk).

....i am ashamed to admit, but I am a total noob. I want to update my entertainment but my hardest task is convincing my wife to do so....i think i may be able to upgrade finally because I told her that if I can't then I'm going to break our 15 year old SDTV.

I would give you some side-by-side comparison shots of 480p to 720p, but my photography skills make both look like garbage

The difference is huge..... and although 1080p is great..... the jump from 480p to 720p is a LOT more pronounced because of the amount of detail you can see follows the principal of Diminishing returns.

DEFINITELY get the Blu-ray player if you get the HDTV though...... no reason to waste money on a DVD player ......

This was before speakers, or curtains.... so it looks pretty bad.... but you can tell there is an immense amount of detail in it...... (720p)

Get a 1080 if money isnt an issue mate. It will do wonders for the blu-rays that you will rent or buy . Sony BD players are pretty dependable and affordable..but yes in the end its totally your call! Oh and welcome to the forums!

Dish Network and maybe Direct TV output at 1080p but you're right cable only outputs at 1080i but I'm sure that won't be the case to much longer and then you may feel the need for another upgrade. You might as well go ahead and get the 1080p now. Also Blu Ray players output at 1080p.

That would be the On Demand Movies that you can rent/download from Dish and Direct that they output at 1080p. They're HD channels are for the most part 1080i.

thanks everyone for helping!

so if i go with a sony or samsung BD player, i can be somewhat confident in getting a dependable product? or should i buy the extended warranty?

its just that i heard a lot about players quiting (either video or audio) and when the operator called the technical service, they were told to download new firmware, which didn't help them. Is it possible that those people were just tards?

again, thanks for helping.

Trust me, if i had it my way it'd be a 1080p, 240Hz, and a BD player.

unless you sit within 6-7 feet of the TV, you won't even notice 1080p on a
40" TV.

.
probably.... anyone with a thumb drive and the link at the top of the page on this website (FIRMWARE) can update the firmware..... Other than the occasional cracked disc from Netflix etc..... I haven't heard about many people having player issues.

If your looking for a Blu-player may i suggest-

1) PS3 (read the Ps3 thread and your'll know why i made it # 1)

2) If your looking for a stand alone player may i suggest Panasonic,

I have a Yamaha player and it uses Panasonic parts, The same with the expensive Denon model and other higher end blu-players

3) Sony players would be my 3rd pick.

My suggestions come from being on this forum more then a year and reading a lot of feed back on These companies, but obviously it all comes down too you !

For me personally i don't have trust in Samsung players and that's just with personal experience with the 1400 model and what i read on other models made buy Samsung

Good luck my friend
