Default How many old b&w titles are there?

Please can you guys help me find any "Classic" titles that are currentlly available on Blu-ray, particually b&w or any films from the 60's 50's 40's 30's 20's etc.

I am hoping to see some of the very earliest movie releases benefit from the current trend in film studios undertaking major film restoration projects and turning that technologie towards films that will really benefit from it.

It would be great to see titles like, Frankenstien, Cassablanca, Metropolis, Psycho, Forbidden plannet, King Kong, The mummy and so many other early titles being given a new lease of life.

I don't mean to knock any of the newer titles, it's just so far the oldest titles I can find only seem to only be 70's releases. I supose that's as far back as the current crop go's, I hope I'm wrong?

Regards

ni-cad.

[Sorry I couldn't resist that lame joke. I have no idea, but it's an interesting question. Not sure if anyone keeps such data -- maybe they do here. Welcome to the forum, and I'm sure someone more helpful than me will be along shortly. ]

FYI - Casablanca was already released and it's stunning. You should also look into Robin Hood from the 30's. Not black and white but a great release of an early color film. And it's on sale for like $12 on Amazon.

Take a look at the James Bond films of the 60s. They look phenomenal on blu.

Casablanca is as clear as day. I'd buy it if it didn't come in that ridiculous box.

You can go to the movie search page and search movies by production year. The link below is for all U.S. movies produced between 1900 and 1970. You'll be happy to know that Casablanca is among them! Welcome to the forums!

Hey thanks you guy's

Great to hear Cassablanca's been released already, I love film noir, mystery and old gangster flicks, can't beat em btw is there any sign of Phsycho getting a releaese? I Also wanted to ask about early gangsta flicks but forget.

I'l check out the search by year pages, didn't know about that, thanks Bluray_ne1 and all.

A few other pre-60's B&W films: Jailhouse Rock (1957), The Third Man (1949), The Seventh Seal (1957), a set of 50's Ray Harryhausen films in B&W and color versions -- 20 Million Miles To Earth, Earth vs The Flying Saucers, It Came From Beneath The Sea, plus the color-only 7th Voyage of Sinbad, and, as mentioned before, Casablanca and The Day The Earth Stood Still.

More are coming soon -- Metropolis has been announced. That may be the 1st silent Blu released, I'm not certain.

Available color classics include 1956's The Searchers ($7.99 at Amazon and a GREAT restoration), Adventures of Robin Hood (1939), Rio Bravo (1960), a number of early James Bond films (60's - 70's). Many classic films from the 60's are available now with more coming all the time. The Graduate is out this month.

EDIT: Sorry! I hadn't seen the link posted above. Check it out -- all these and many other titles are listed, including several vintage B&W films.

Did anyone mention The 400 Blows?

Eden Log might as well be in B&W. It isn't, of course, but color is highly recessed. And it's a new title, but just thought I'd add that.

In addition to owning the ones I hi-lighted, I also have Raging Bull, Dog Day Afternoon, Repulsion, Last Year At Marienbad, and Young Frankenstein (these are the ones I can think of)

Other than the ones I don't have in my hand yet (like Seventh Seal, Repulsion, and Last Year At Marienbad) They all look fantastic on Blu-ray..... great improvements in resolution.
