Which western do you prefer more: True Grit (2010) or 3:10 to Yuma (2007)?
Although True Grit has a better female protagonist than any of the female characters in 3:10 to Yuma, I have to go with 3:10 to Yuma because it was more exciting, better action & story, great sound and music, and it was very touching. The only thing I really liked about True Grit were the cartoonish characters. With all this Oscar/Golden Globe award talk for True Grit, I don't understand how a movie like 3:10 to Yuma got practically ignored by those award shows (it was only nominated for sound and music). Maybe it's all about the timing - maybe westerns are more "in" now than they were in 2007. What I also liked about the two films is that they both had bad-ass little guys (Ben Foster and Barry Pepper). I find it funny and interesing that short actors can get better roles in westerns than in contemporary time-period movies. For example, Ben Foster just does not seem threatening in a movie like Jason Statham's The Mechanic, but he truly seems menacing in 3:10 to Yuma. |

I've found several of their choices for winners and/or nominations bizarre in the past few years. |

Tough, tough call. Throw in The Proposition and I would have an even harder time picking the best of the lot. Having to chose, though, I pick 3:10 to Yuma with the deciding factor being the supporting actor, namely, Ben Foster, who is truly menacing (and, for the same reason I would put The Proposition first because of Danny Huston's role). Really, though, they are all great movies and are all part of my collection.

I go with 3:10, but I like both a lot. I hope for more Westerns now that True Grit has earned c. $230 million worldwide. That's a lot more than the $70 million that 3:10 earned. True Grit was rated PG-13, while 3:10 was R, but obviously that's not the only reason.
3:10 is more of a tragedy. It's more emotional to me. It's also more violent. Also, the halfway (or more than?) sympathetic portrayal of the bad guy is a problem, I think, for some people who want something more clear cut. True Grit gave that, as I recall, even if Jeff Bridges character was far from being a typical good guy. Anyway, the blu-ray of 3:10 is great. Love the music on that film! Right now it's a steal at 7.99 from amazon....Totally worth it, imho. Good rewatch value for me. |
