Batman Begins: Saving Ra's al Ghul

So you've seen Batman Begins. You know how it ends. I won't spoiler this so let's put it plain and simple.

Batman let's Ra's al Ghul stay on the train as it crashes into the basement floors of some building and explode.

But the question that comes to mind is, had Batman actually tried to save him, would Ra's have let him?
