Blu-ray discs from Japan

Since the U.S. and Japan are both Region A (in the Blu-Ray world), is it possible to play a Japanese import Blu-Ray disc on a Blu-Ray player here in the U.S.?

Ex: Region A Blu-Ray player like Sony's BDP-S300 being able to play back Japanese import (Region A) Blu-Ray Disc like Disney's "Eight Below" for it's DTS 5.1 (The North American Blu-Ray Disc of "Eight Below" does not have DTS).
