Unhappy CONFIRMED: ALIEN Prequel in the works

UPDATED 5/29/09: ALIEN PREQUEL CONFIRMED
Quote:
Rumors were coming out of horror site Bloody-Disgusting that 20th Century Fox was rlier today, interested in relaunching the "Alien" franchise with some sort of reboot or remake, following the recent news that Robert Rodriguez would be doing the same thing for 20th Century Fox's other sci-fi creature franchise, Predator. While there was no confirmation from the Fox camp or the trades, Collider's roving reporter "Frosty" cornered director Tony Scott at the press conference for his own remake of The Taking of Pelham 123 to get confirmation and learned that Scott-Free Productions is indeed producing a remake with director Carl Rinsch helming. They hope that the movie, which is meant act as a prequel to Ridley Scott's original 1979 classic Alien, will be shooting by the end of the year.
Source: ComingSoon.net via Bloody-Disgusting

OP Note: Since this is a prequel, it has been stated that Ripley or Sigourney Weaver will NOT be making an appearance.

If they can get Cameron to direct and Scott to produce, I'm all for it.

the rumor is that Carl Rinsch is directing, a commercial/music video director and does work for Scott Free Productions, who is also producing the remake.

I believe that list was lost several years ago in a California wildfire. Alien is one of my three favorite SF films, it needs no remake---but I'd rather see that happen than this.

If Ridley Scott is on board, why doesn't he direct it?

probably has enough on his plate i have to admit having him direct a remake of his own movie would be kind of weird. it's like you're publicly admitting the old one doesn't hold up well anymore or something. then again, he is (supposedly) serving as producer who knows..

It seems like we could have the same argument about Raimi and the possible Evil Dead remake.

Eh. Why not? It would basically just be another entry in the franchise that shares a name with the original. It's not like they're ever going to continue the original chronology anyway. It's pretty much accepted that Alien Resurrection failed to re-start the franchise. And while I personally would have liked to see a follow-up to that movie for closure purposes, it's just not going to happen. So I really have no problem with them making a new movie that ignores the previous continuity. I just hope it's a new story and not a complete retread of the original. That would be pointless.

It wouldn't be the first time a director has done this.

IMO this is a terrible idea. Alien is a movie that should be left alone.

The only thing that I think would be weird about it is, that the original was already so bad ass. I really see no reason to remake it, other than capitalizing on a for sure win at the box office.

I don't know, maybe if I heard Ridley give a legitimate reason as to why he feels that it would be necessary to remake it.

Surely Ridley Scott could just make another Sci-Fi film if he's itching to so badly without revamping one already so perfect.

And as for The Last Starfighter, I didn't hear about that. That sucks!

I don't believe they should be doing this but what do I know, and I am sure they don't care what I think anyway

I hope Blade Runner isen't next.
These two flicks have always been among my top 10.
Alien should be left alone except for a A/V restoration of the best kind!
Similar to that of Blade Runner

Thumbs down, plain and simple. This will simply bastardize the franchise even further.

I think you're right Sus, This is just another Alien rumor.

I liked the last one best that had Ridley directing a prequel.
