Question Question about upgrading to a new reciever

I currently have http://reviews.cnet.com/av-receivers...=rightCol;also with http://www.bose.com/controller?url=/...s_10/index.jsp

speakers with the exception of another double cube speaker for the center channel speaker. I bought it in 2005 and am not looking into spending the amount it would cost to get a whole new set of speakers plus sub then, a new receiver. I live in a condo that has a pretty good size family room. The room is however connected to 2 other condos via 2 separate walls one on the left and one on the right of the room. I'd be getting the receiver primiarly for clearer sound You think it'd be worth it w/my stimulus check to get a new receiver or not?

With blu, you could get a receiver allowing you to take advantage of lossless codecs. If your using a standalone with analog outs, you might want to try that as well.

I'd say 'yes' you'll notice a difference though your speakers would also be a limiting factor. (i'd say the same about my setup under certain circumstances, so that's not a shot....and i'm NOT recommending you upgrade the speakers)

I have a PS3 but, thought you could set the audio to HDMI instead of optical thus, having both audio and video passed through by the PS3. I know you can do that w/LPCM but, since I don't have a reciever capable of playing the new audio formats. I'm not sure of the details on how to do it w/a HDMI or what audio formats are compatable with that method(maybe it's just PCM that you can do that way). Didn't take your comment that way FYI.

you do NOT want anything with 'audio pass-through'. Do you have a budget for a receiver? any future upgrade plans we should keep in mind (or not) to make recommendations?

about 250-300 for reciever and no plans on replacing speakers or replacing PS3 as Blu-ray player.

If you want to upgrade, here is a nice receiver for your price range.

Last one at the time I posted for $319.

Can you sell your current unit?

I could but, have to wait until I get my stimulus check to buy the new receiver(money is a bit tight right now) and I want to make sure everything works out well. I've never heard of that site. Is it reputable? I think my speakers are 95 watts RMS. You think that's ok the wattage is a bit over on the receiver specs?

yes, the onkyo in full surround is prolly only going to put out about 75 watts per channel or less, given that its bigger brother is putting out 75 wpc 5 or more channels being driven, the 606 is prolly the same or a little less. 2 channel stereo may be different, that is where speakers that perform better then Bose can perform at a higher level. In stereo it could be putting out closer to 100 watts per channel.

Since My Blu-ray's are going to be played via PS3 am I only going to get PCM w/a new reciever? Or just send video and audio via hdmi? One hdmi from Ps3 to the reciever then one from the reciever to the tv. So that the video and audio will be sent via the same hdmi cord. Will I only be able to get PCM or is there a way to get Dolby True HD and DTS-MA via the PS3 that way?

yep.

PS3 > Hdmi > AVR> HDMI >tv
set the PS3 to linear PCM

The AVR will show 'multi-channel' but the PS3 will decode TrueHD and DTS-HDMA and send out to the receiver.

You are still getting DTS-HD MA & TrueHD, its just coming through as PCM because the PS3 does not Bit Stream lossless audio & never will. You will see "multich" light up on your AVR but rest assured its lossless.

Any recommendations for Onkyo recievers? Any sites w/good prices? I have a 5.1 system so, the extra channels are not a concern. New only. I don't want to take a chance on used receivers.

Dont go to cheap, you might regret it later down the road, the key is to try and future proof as much as possible in my opinion.
