Default Onkyo receiver smell

I installed my new Onkyo TX-SR607 about 4 weeks ago and it still has that 'new' smell when I turn it on. First time my wife entered the room she tought a plastic cable was melting.

Is that normal? Did I do something wrong? Will the smell go away?

I read on other forums that Onkyo receiver tend to have a bit of a 'electronics' smell but I wanted to make sure it's normal and it will stay or go away.

Thanks in advance.

I have the same receiver but I don't remember having that "smell" that long. I would just give everything a look over to ensure nothing is melting, otherwise I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks for replying. Actually, coincidence has it that the smell is just starting to go away. When I first used it, there was clearly a 'new tech equipment' kind of smell there but now it seems virtually completely gone.
Thanks for having taken the time to answer my question.

I bought a brand new Da-Lite screen for my projector and the smell was unbelivable for over a month. My wife would refuse to come to the HT room. It finally went away.

Yep the same for me too. I have the 607 and it was rather punjent for a while. I've built alot of PC's over the years and the PSU's often produce a similar "melting plastic" smell on intial use so I thought nothing of it when my Onkyo did it. I can see why it'd be concerning if you haven't encountered the phenonomon before!

Yeah, it was the first time for me, as my previous players and TV's didn't have that. But now it has dissipated. I had checked the cabling just to be sure and everything seemed OK.
