United Kingdom Do you find it difficult to like blind buys?

We've all bought movies on blu-ray that we previously hadn't seen at the cinema. Some we liked, others we didn't, and do not understand why others like it.

Am I the only one who finds it difficult to like some of my blind buys?

Examples of films I have bought without seeing them in the cinema:
X-Men: First Class - Love it
The Hangover - Don't like it
Burke & Hare - It's okay
Knight & Day - Love it
Scott Pilgrim vs The World - Love it

But what about the people who don't? What about the ones that just end up leaving unliked blind buys in their collections?

Anything that I end up disliking I just sell, with all the Blu-rays and DVDs I own, I barely have space as it is for films I like, let alone films I hate. Of some of the blind buys I've made:

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader - Liked it
Flags of Our Fathers - Found it in Tesco for £3 and couldn't resist. It was good for that price, but didn't really feel like something I wanted to watch again, so I sold it.
Fast and Furious 5 - Birthday present, really liked it
The Expendables - Christmas present last year, really liked it
Resident Evil: Afterlife - Hated it
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World - Didn't like it very much
Predators - It was pretty good, could've been a lot better though. Not sure whether I'll keep it or not, I think I need to watch it again.

I've never understood the way people go on about blind buying films on here.

Some here find it unusual or strange to buy a film if you haven't yet seen it in the cinema?
I do that all the time as I hardly ever goto the cinema.

If you really don't like a film you've bought just sell it?

Surely by the time you goto the cinema and pay the prices they charge these days, and then petrol/bus charges to get there, you wouldn't really be losing much if anything by just buying it anyway?

If you are on this site, I cannot see how you could consider yourself blind or have blind buys. At the very least you are going to get a rough idea what a certain film would look like if you are considering a blind purchase

I'd say the issue is: Do you want to do the research to find out whether you might like the film you wish to purchase, or do you just not care at all.

Most of my pick up's have been blind buys lately and I love it. Nothing bets buying a movie, watching it for the first time and loving it.

Alot of people think blind buying is stupid, but to me, its like going to the cinema and I know what kind of movies I like, so for the most part enjoy everything I pick up.

Most of my Blu-ray blind buys have been dissapointing, like the Mechanic, True Grit and Battle Los Angeles. I still have the last two, but despite being decent I felt they could have been so much better.

Anyways my best Blu-ray blind buys have to be Nikita season 1 and Transformers: ROTF (the worst out of the trilogy but still good).

I've done much Blind Buying ... especially of Criterion Collection movies. Some I liked, some I didn't. Most were just OK and I doubt I'll ever watch them again. I'll generally read movie reviews on Rotten Tomato or IMDB prior to making the purchase but even so, personal preference varies so much from person to person. Good reviews are no guarantee. I rarely if ever go to the movies so I will continue the practice. Most movies I dislike I either give to my son or donate to the public library.

I'd rather blind buy a blu-ray and be able to re-sell, than pay to go and see it at the cinema in those uncomfortable chairs or rent a crappy low bitrate film from one of the streaming sites.

Ive never really thought of it that way, I suppose every time I go to the cinema its a 'blind buy' I probably know as much about a film on a cinema trip than I do about most film I buy 'blind' The rise of cinema prices along with the cost of getting there, a bite to eat etc makes a cinema trip around the same price as buying the film on Blu-ray, so from a value point of view if you buy a film and dont like it you can sell it and get at least some of your money back, maybe even make a profit, something you cant do with a used cinema ticket!

but going by the few examples so far, a few of the blind buys Ive bought over the past 6 months or so would go something like this...

Source Code - pleasantly surprised, short but enjoyable
Triangle - Very good, right up my street
Scott Pilgrim - Hmmm didnt love it, but didnt hate it..ok I suppose
The Expendables - Big let down, promised a lot, delivered very little
Rise of the Planet of the Apes - fantastic, top 5 film of the year for me
Thor - Again probably in my top 5 films this year, surprised at how good it was
Paul - Very good, better than expected

I very rarely go to the cinema anymore so most of my films are blind buys but I usually get an idea on whether or not I will enjoy them from trailers and friends opinions, in the last few months I have blind bought...

Transformers 3
Super 8
Cowboys and Aliens
Kung Fu Panda 2
Thor
Captain America
X-Men First Class
Cars 2
The Green Lantern

I enjoyed them all and all now have a home in my collection.

I have just been given 2 films by my brother though which I would never have bought for myself in a million years (Legend of Zorro/Devils Own)

They will be the ultimate test lol

The money it costs for me and missus to go to cinema with drinks ect it ends up costing nearly as much as a nice meal and there's nearly always idiots in there who sit in front or chatter away plus I can get 2-3 new movies for the same price.

I never blind buy anymore. About two years ago I had a huge clear out of DVDs because I had so many I'd never watch again. Most of my movie watching is done via Love Film and Sky movies. I'll then just buy the stuff I really, REALLY enjoyed and would watch again and again.

I blind buy almost all the time, just for the sake of curiosity.

Since I buy most of the time Criterion, Gaumont, Carlotta or Masters Of Cinema, I'm not often disappointed.

For more recent stuff, usually, I buy either what I've seen in theater or what I wanted to see but missed. A few times I was a bit let down, and felt the movie was from OK to quite good, but not really worth the buying. I think, among 1 000 movies, I have less than 10 or 15 which I thought "god that's awful".

Like most here, I have a mix of blind buys and informed buys - I'll admit that I will buy pretty much anything Disney bring out on Blu Ray in the UK (with the exception of "buddies" films and I import confirmed region free titles like Rocketeer which I think may take ages to get a B release.

Of my blind buys I tend to eventually get around to watching them if they are cheaper ones (5-10) or if expensive/new ones I'll try watch asap so that if I dont want to keep it I can quickly sell on and recoup my money. I bought Dark of The Moon on release from Send it, watched, and then cashed in at Gamestation, beating CEX by £1, for £14. It cost me £1 to watch it, so cheaper than renting.

Generally I know what kind of films I like and don't base it on reviews of the film or on technical reviews (e.g. picture quality) - I watch them to enjoy and whilst I like a really good picture, if the story is good then its secondary to that.

My last three were Syriana (2.99 thats entertainment) - liked , Smurfs 3D (I should have known better, what a pile of &^*(cashed in at CEX for £2 less than paid), Carlos (£5 play.com) - liked.

Some of my favourite films have been bought purely on me thinking they look interesting or like the genre.
