I thought a dedicated thread for Thrift Store Finds was long overdue for our fellow Canadian members.
I know that some of us have various different ways of getting our "fix" without having to go through Amazon or Best Buy. I've seen fellow members sifting through the movies at a Value Village looking on the BR.com app to see if the had the movie in their collection (made me smile). If you'd like to share these kind of finds with the communitee, I think a lot of people will be interested in how you build up your collection in what we could call eco-friendly collecting. A lot of us probably follow youtubers like CinemaSickness or Cereal At Midnight but don't feel the need to film and share their finds with the world, but would still like to share with other people what they found. I know I've had to rely on this community to share my joy regarding some of my finds because my girlfriend couldn't care less if I found a 4K Steelbook of Thor: Ragnarok for $3.99 factory sealed, to her it's just another movie thay will be added to the already enormous pile I have stacked up in our office. Share your finds here, Blu-Rays, DVDs, CDs, Books, Electronics, Beer Mugs... no judgement here I buy one almost everytime I go to Value Village ![]() |

I'll do the honors of opening this thread with my latest trip to Value Village in Chomedey, Laval, Quebec. It seems that they've either changed management or they started to change their prices recently because I saw a lot of movie priced at 4.99$ and some used hardcovers like Stephen Kings at 7.99-8.99$, to be honest they're starting to be on the expensive side.
Picked up the following items: On DVD: https://imgur.com/gallery/0vg42Ok - 99f ($2.40) - 20 Ans d'Écart ($2.40) On CD: https://imgur.com/gallery/H4A1JQ3 - Michael Jackson - Immortal ($1.60) - Fred Pellerin - Silence ($1.60) Books: https://imgur.com/gallery/yObBers - 3 Taschen Books (Connery, Nicholson & Pacino) ($6.40) Beer Glass: - Guiness Pint (Brand New in promotional box) ($1.60) - Flipped for $10 to pay for most of the lot ![]() Also got a T-Shirt for a buddy of mine as a joke, it'll probably go back to Value Village in a couple weeks but the $2.50 was well worth it. (Prices are 20% Off because I donated some clothes and they gave me a voucher) Last edited by jcaste; 07-02-2019 at 03:44 AM. Reason: Added Links and Prices |

Thank you for starting this thread. I always wondered why there wasn't a Canadian thread.
I'm not kidding here when I say about 60% of my Blu-ray collection is from Value Village, Salvation Army etc. I don't know what it is but it seems I have been lucky building a Blu-ray collection in thrift shops. And many of them have been sealed copies. My greatest find was finding four sealed Scream Factory editions – Sleepaway Camp I, II and III and Class of 1984. The other great find was the Dark Knight Trilogy w/ book sealed for $10. Other great finds: Mary Poppins sealed with slipcase, Sleeping Beauty sealed (no slipcase), JFK digibook sealed, Shawshank Redemption digibook sealed, Hanna steelbook sealed, The Sound of Music box set (sealed). Criterion, of course, remains ever elusive. I have never seen one (sealed or used) in any of my hunts and I've been doing it for a few years now. |

New Thrift Store finds from Centre de Dépannage St-Janvier, they had a 2 for 1 sale on Media going on two weeks ago, forgot to take pictures before I boxed everything up, some of this is for flipping purposes but most of this is for the PM... here's what I got:
On DVD: - Russel Peters - Outsourced (Sealed Brand New) On Blu-ray: - Nightmare Before Christmas Video Games: - Grand Theft Auto V (PS4) (No Manual or maybe it just doesnt come with a manual anymore) On CD: - U2 - Zooropa - Lord Of The Rings Motion Picture Trilogy Sountracks (3-Discs) - Elton John - Honky Chateau - Dangerous Minds Soundtrack - and about 3 other CD's I can't recall right now ![]() All that for a massive $5.00! Everything ended up being free after I sold the GTA V on Facebook Marketplace plus I was able to give the Nightmare Before Christmas as a gift. On to the next hunt...! |

At least 3 times that of DVD. Not in CAN though, in the US with Weekly trips to stores for years. Bascially a needle in a haystack considering the millions of others I passed over in that time frame to grab those. Not a good source for Criterion Collectors thats for sure. I have picked up a ton of 3D movies though. |

Only found 2 4K's in the wild about a year ago, Ghosbusters (the new one) it was a rental from Videotron and only had the 4K disc but did have the slipcover, think I paid 3$, already had the Blu-Ray from Videotron, just merged the two together hehe.
The other one was Jason Bourne, complete disc-wise but no slipcover for 3$ also, flipped it on Kijiji a few days later to put money towards those expensive 4K Steelbooks from Best Buy ![]() |

New Pick-Up: Value Village (Chomedey, Laval)
Blu-Ray: - Mildred Pierce (Collector’s Edition) $3.67 - Milk $2.75 CD: - Rag’N’Bone - Human $1.83 - The Game - The Documentary (CD/DVD Combo) $1.83 - Prince Royce - Prince Royce $1.83 Video Games: - Sly Cooper And The Thievious Raccoonus (PS2) $2.75 - Clive Barker’s Jericho (PS3) $2.75 Book: - 10 x Goosebumps Books (Almost brand new, original release) $10 Been picked up all the Goosebump books for a while now, going for a full original release collection, going to read them with the little one when she gets older. The had a lot of Blu-Rays, about 10-12, more than usual and decently priced at $2.99 each, which is a good price in my opinion. They also had a few GameCube games (really they were hockey pucks) and a few PS2 & Xbox 360 games. Also, they had a good CD selection, someone probably just had dumped a collection a few days prior, a lot of hip-hop, punk & metal, everything was in mint condition, too bad I already had most of them but I would’ve gone crazy a couple of years back. Happy Hunting! |

I've been in a similar state of "excitement" before until i also noticed missing discs. Unsure if they got dropped off that way. I'm more inclined to believe that even when paying next to nothing and the money is going to good causes, shoplifting still takes place in these places.

People definitely steal, which is a shame because the money they would've gotten could've went to a charity in need. It's a 3$ item, if you can't afford 3$ and you're shopping for movies, change your priorities in life!
Seen it happen in front of my eyes at Value Village in Pierrefond, Qc. I made a comment "Are you seriously doing this?" and the lady screamed "F-Off mind your own f-in business" and she left with a DVD copy of The Dark Knight in her jacket pocket. Just sad. |

That burns me to no end. If I was there, I would definitely call them out or report them or snap a photo.
Many times I come across empty cases of good movies. I think it's probably the same guy/girl that hits multiple stores. What's worse is that the stores chuck the empty cases and refuse to give them away or even sell them. I guess if they give them away, it makes me look like the thief. Also $2.99 is a pretty good price for BDs. Usually DVDs are $2.49-$2.99 around me and BDs are $3.99-$4.99. |

I've also seen people put out movies with empty cases, I guess not everyone looks inside to see if the items there or not or if it actually matches with the case it's in. |

The Value Village cashiers always ask me if I checked inside, which I think is very good customer service, because it reminds the customer to check to ensure the disc(s) is present and also it minimizes returns/exchanges (although I believe physical media is final sale at VV - I can't recall).

All media is final sale at the thrift stores that I've been to.
Yes, you have to check each one -- not only to see if there is a disc inside, but that the correct disc is in there. Some stores leave the case on the shelf and keep the discs behind the counter. Annoying, but it prevents theft. I was at one on the weekend where she gave me the wrong discs. |
