After wallowing through this recent past threads on ROTF and Knowing.
It begs the question. Will you pick up a Blu-ray because of the AMAZING sound and picture? Both of which these titles will have. I will get Knowing, not sure about ROTF |

I watched The Spirit on ppv a while back, and personally, I have no idea how people can stand watching that crap. Completely stupid movie. I don't even care if its the best PQ & AQ out there on blu-ray... I wouldn't even spend $5 on it. And the movie Knowing... some people got issues with that movie, I have no idea why... but if you are one of those who don't like biblical stories taken out on a film.. then I suggest you rent it first. But me, I'm buying it July 7th for sure.

Picture quality and audio quality do not really affect the overal enjoyment of movies, at least for me. Being of Thai heritiage, I love Thai films and Asian cinema but sometimes, especially with DVDs, I'd have to watch a letterboxed non-anamorphic DVD (ooh, burn him he's a witch!) just to get the uncut versions of my favorite films. I ask my family to pick up Thai movies for me but I know they can not afford to buy me the DVDs so I am happy with VideoCDs (blasphemy, drown him he's a witch!) Getting back to Blu-ray Disc, as much as I despise the low rent picture and subtitle quality of Paris Je'Taime, its still a wonderful film that deserves to be viewed at least once. I do admit that since there is no Blu-ray Disc of Penelope, I watched it on Netflix Instant and while the streaming picture quality was near DVD, not exact but good enough, and the sound was stereo; I still enjoyed the movie. And yes, i did not enjoy The Spirit even though the picture and audio were phenonmenal, the film itself not so much. There was also Fired Up! which also looked and sounded quite amazing but the overall story had far, far, far less pep then Bring It On. |

As previously mentioned crap like The Spirt is unwatchable even with great PQ & AQ. I think some average films can become watchable with a good transfer, Speed Racer springs to mind, as long as theres something in the story the PQ & AQ can make a difference for me.
Another example would be documentries such as Planet Earth etc. I never used to watch these on TV and I have NEVER bought this type of programme on DVD. Now i watch the BBC thinking that will look amazing when I buy it on Blu-Ray and I've found i actually love thses shows so Blu-ray has increased my knowledge of how this planet works!!! As an extra note, I've seen ROTF a couple of times and for me don't see it as a crap movie, personally it'll be a day 1 purchase for me. Last edited by Sgtpepper27; 06-27-2009 at 06:19 PM. |

Ditto. I had such high hopes for this movie because I used to read the comics. I hated it, but I may buy it someday just for the visuals if I ever find it in a cheap bin for ten bucks or less.

You know, many of the bad movies I've seen that many claim the best picture quality, use some pretty bad stylistic choices that harm picture quality (Hot, blooming contrast, orange skin tones, unnatural cartoonish color platete), and audio quality (Loud yet lacking fidelity, forced use of surrounds), and most of us know that know the format well know that the best transfers are actually great or decent movies (No Country for Old Men, Ratatouille, I robot, Seabiscuit, Black Snake Moan, a few examples). I also think movies shot 30-70 years ago look alot better than most modern movies (Have you seen The adventures of robin hood, the Robe, Casablanca, Patton and lots of other classics), they have a photorealistic look to them that I'm curious why modern films have to look so artificial (or digital).

By looking at divorce statistics, it seems many realy do just decide on looks.
