Default Camera settings for capturing on computer

I want to save the highest quality video onto my hard drives. I have been capturing the video as .avi files to date.

I am currently using a Sony HDR-HC3 which uses HD-mini DV Tapes.

Adobe Elements 7.0 captures .avi files from my camera. When I play with the cameras output, and the camera shows up as an HD capture device, it records the files as mpeg instead of avi.

Is there a camera settings FAQ page around here that I could use for both capture and transfer to PC? I looked but couldn't find it and there's no stickies.
