Default Can my receiver accept banana plugs?

I'm looking to finally upgrade my speaker wire and I'd also like to get some banana plugs (as I don't think 12 gauge wire would fit on my receiver). So here's the problem. I've never actually seen a banana plug in person before, so I'm not 100% sure if it would work with my existing receiver.

The receiver is an Onkyo HT R940.

Sorry for the bad quality of the picture, but that's the best I can find. I've read the manual, and it mentions nothing about terminal connection options (banana plugs, spades, etc).

So would a 12 gauge/banana plug combination work?

The photo looks like standard 5 way terminals.
A number of manufacturers offer these but, depending on the spacing between L & R terminals, I recommend dual plugs so you have only 1 plug per wire connection.
Most banana plugs will easily accomodate 12 ga wire.

Yep, you are good but one piece of advice be gentle when you are pushing the banana plugs into the back of the receiver you don't want to force it in and have the solder come apart on the inside of the receiver.

OK, perfect.

I just ordered 12 of these banana plugs. (for my front 3, for now)

And 1 roll of this 12 gauge wire.

Hopefully I will be able to hear a difference in the change of wire thickness. Going from 22 to 12 gauge should be quite the change from all of the comments I've been getting. Is shipping usually a 1 week wait from the order date?

How thin is 22 g? It must have looked like dental floss?

I think the floss is actually thicker. Now I'm really pumped that I'll hear a difference.

Just came home to some speaker wire and banana plugs sitting at my door. I'm currently replacing the wire floss and will give my initial impressions soon.

Very first thing I've discovered is that it is not wise to buy a cheap pair of wire strippers! I've resorted to using a scissors more than once!

The banana plugs fit into everything very smoothly except for my Onkyo speakers. They fit loosely in there, and I will not be using plugs on them, only wire.

Like I said, review coming soon!

22 AWG wire is defintely way too small for home theater use - at least with typical receivers. Using it, one won't have a lot of problems at lowered volumes, but if you want to approach reference-levels, then 22 AWG can show its limitations quite audibly when called upon to deliver more massive power. I have experienced this firsthand.

Banana plugs rule!

I wasn't really sure what to expect switching out my wire, and I wasn't sure if my ears could pick up on it. I'll just say that I thought I'd be fighting the placebo effect hard. Result? Not even close.

The volume is louder and and the audio is clearer - without question. Before, I had the EQ settings on the Bass at +6 and Treble +4. Now I don't need them tweaked at all. I think the bass drivers were too much to drive efficiently with that smaller wire.

I'll try and run a full volume test sometime tomorrow as I can't crank it up very loud being as I'm in an apartment and it's 10:30 at night. Within 1 minute of hooking them up, I'm an advocate of upgrading speaker wire.

Maybe. I'm demoing the wire using my Swans which cost $950 for the pair. (for reference with my statements) I think 14awg is the lowest HT recommendation that I see tossed around. No clue though.

I use 16 AWG wiring for my 7.1 setup. It is generally recommended not to go thinner than 16. Many here use 16 with quite a few using 14 and 12 AWG.
