United Kingdom PS3 3D Game Review

I just got back from the store where they had a 55" 3D Sony Bravia set up.

They have an option to watch everything from Sports to Movies to ofcourse, PlayStation 3 games.

They Demo'd MotorStorm for me in 3D and I was blown away! It looks like you are INSIDE the game. Everything from the vehicles to the grass on the ground was in 3D. It looked incredible. Thankfully, the Sony glasses look and feel like regular sunglasses (think Oakley). Everything is much more realistic and immersive. Then they showed me SuperStarDust and Wipeout in 3D. Both looked spectacular. I can't even begin to imagine how good a game like KZ3 will look considering it's being designed specifically for 3D.

I was skeptical about 3D TV's and how PS3 would implement it at first, but I'm sold. 3D gaming is definitely going to be a huge part of the future.

Do yourself a favor and go to your local BestBuy to check this technology out. I definitely was not disappointed.

non-gaming related: Football was spectacular in 3D. It's as if you have midfield seats and you're part of the crowd.

I played Motorstorm and the dust from the game looks like it's gonna hit your face! I love it. I may jump in to the 3D tv thing earlier than I thought.

I'm jumping in as soon as Mitsubishi releases their converter for the DLP's. Already got a 3-D receiver.

Got to test the new Sony 3DTV at Futureshop. Sadly they didn't have a PS3 connected. But, I can honestly say that the Sony 3DTV looked much more refined in quality than the Samsung 3DTV did.

I can't wait for the second generation of Sony 3DTV models to hit the market. I'll be on them like maple syrup on pancakes! Mmm, mmm, good!

Sounds cool, but I'm still skeptical. There's a difference between playing a 3D game on a TV a foot away from you, and doing that practically in a house setting.

Once I'm 6-8 feet away, on my couch, I imagine I'll stop caring about the 3D effects from across the room, as they're not nearly as engulfing as they are when you are right in front of the TV.

But more importantly, I don't see it catching on with enough people to become a big part of gaming any time soon, even if it's amazing. 3D TVs are quite pricey at the moment, and I can't imagine them being in many homes anytime soon.

Yeah, I think people will adjust their seats accordingly if they want the 3D effect. I have a 65" and I'm sure my seating would still be fine.

Allow me to make my long story short: I can't really see 3D on 3D TVs. I can tell the long version if people want to read, but I'm hating the fact that I can't jump on the 3D TV bandwaggon.

And I don't have a lazy eye, or am colorblind or have a dominant eye over another, or anything like that. I have the same prescription for myopia on both eyes, and that's it.

I've done some research and apparently 10% of people can't really see 3D on 3D TVs. It is something that you can learn and get used to, hopefully I'll be able to get used to it.

Good luck and get to that eye training.

Obviously you haven't been to see any displays in action have you? The FutureShop store I visited have the stand with the glasses about 5 feet away from the 55" 3DTV already and it looks great. I took several steps back in order to see it in action with compensation for my living room setup. It looked perfectly fine. Hell, even checking the viewing angles at that distance proved quite impressive.

Blu-ray didn't catch on because of price for almost two years. Now look how popular it is. Within the next 3 years it will become a situation where every TV sold will have 3D capabilities. It will be a feature that is completely unavoidable. Trust me. It will catch on.

Personally? I believe that the biggest factor holding people back from buying the 3DTVs is the price of the glasses. For crying out loud, the TV should come with 2 pairs of the glasses. It's common sense. That way, people will be more likely to try it out. Therefore, they will be more likely to use the feature more regularly. Therefore, they will be more likely to purchase a couple more pairs of glasses for other members of the family and/or guests. Therefore, the technology gets more exposure. Therefore, the technology gets faster adoption rates! But no... big companies have to think big money over short term.

People think the next step after Blu-ray will be digital download in HD, but I think Blu-ray's longevity has lengthened thanks to 3D. I think Blu-ray will enter into the mainstream in a few years as companies like Vizio will produce cheaper HDTVs/players. As Blu-ray becomes mainstream, 3D Blu-ray will become the niche product.
I don't see 3D becoming as mainstream as people will believe. Not everyone can see 3D and not everyone can afford it or desire it. However, I think it'll at least become as popular as Blu-ray was becoming two years ago.

I saw the same demo in the Sony Centre in Dublin.

The OP has literally spoken for me.. "blown away!" "I'm sold"….

Motorstorm was RIDICULOUSLY good!! I ducked at one point when a tree branch was lying low! The demo convinced me to start saving NOW for a 3D set.. Didn’t they say at E3 that my March there will be 20 games released in native 3D??? Bring it on!!

I had seen the football before, looks fantastic. We have a 3D channel already over here showing live sports and other events so just need the tv now!

Wow! You are way ahead of other European countries! 3D channel? I wish.. At least there is no reason for me to invest in 3D anytime soon

True, I haven't seen the displays, which is why I won't criticize whether they work or not. I'm sure they do. But that's not why I think it won't be a big deal (at least initially).

Blu-ray, for the most part, succeeded because of PS3. People were mostly buying PS3's to play games but even people who only wanted a BD player saw it was the best-value BD player on the market, which got a lot of BD players into houses, and kept Blu-ray alive long enough to kill off HD-DVD.

And even people with SDTV's could see a benefit from buying a movie on BD. Older titles often got remastered for the BD release, so the movie itself was cleaned up and would look better, colors would be more vibrant, even if the resolution wasn't being taken advantage of.

To benefit from 3D on a PS3, you need a 3DTV. If you have a DLP, fine, but an LCD or Plasma will set you back a few grand. A lot of people jumped into getting HDTVs as the prices came down, and I don't think they planned on getting a new TV so soon, and they won't.

As far as glasses go, that's another reason I think it won't be as big as people are predicting... but it's not because of how much the glasses cost.

Blu-rays offered an improvement to movie watching that required the viewer to change nothing about how they watched movies. For 3D, you have to wear the glasses to get any use out of it, and while some people tolerate them, I don't think anyone actually enjoys wearing the glasses.

3D will become something people will use once in a while, but it will not take over their gaming or regular TV/movie watching, because it's too much of a strain on their eyes, and annoying to have the glasses hanging on your head for hours at a time.

In no way do I think the 3D doesn't look cool, or have the potential to make games more immersive. I just don't think it's going to be a big deal any time soon for a vast majority of people. As people hold out early on, to see if 3D really ends up becoming a big deal, it can end up creating a sort of self-fulfilling prophecy, where 3D fails because not enough people supported it (since they were all waiting to see if it would succeed).

3D-ready will gradually become a standard feature of HDTV's, rolling down the size and price range but I agree it's not going to be something you use all the time. Most of the content I watch on TV in the UK still isn't HD. It's going to have a bigger impact initially in gaming and movies.

I would agree with this. Is there really much difference in actual material costs outside of the R&D for this tech? From what it sounds like, it's just programming the tech a little differently.

I still have a 720p that I was going to eventually upgrade to 1080p. I'll hold out a little longer.

I would play 3D games all day if I could I don't think it puts that much strain on the eyes (well for me it doesn't) and it's just something you have to get used to (like your wrist hurting from hours of gaming).
