Blu-ray Duke

I have never seen an episode. I would like to hear any and all opinions on the show. I have read some user reviews at Netflix, but I would sure like to hear more. Gimmie the nitty gritty to help me decide on a rent or a buy when it becomes available.
Thanks all ! |

Its a pretty good show,I caught a few episodes from Season 1 on BBC America.I was hoping to get it in Blu but I'll wait for the price to drop a little.
Its one of those shows that you have to follow from the beginning to understand at least thats how I figure it out. |

It's got a character from Doctor Who called captain Jack, if you liked his character from Doctor Who maybe you'll like this series. It's a tiny bit like Doctor Who, but ruder, and without robots or time-travel Tardis machines or daleks etc. I think it was mostly them chasing people wearing monster masks a bit like Buffy but ruder. There's another UK series that I think is sort of similar to Torchwood, but in my view is probably better (though I don't think it's made in HD), called Primeval where they have CGI dinosaurs and other monster things in the modern world and is quite good (not totally realistic but quite good).
Also, I'd rent first instead of buying in case you're not sure you'll like it. Last edited by 4K2K; 07-26-2008 at 08:28 PM. |

I haven't seen Deadwood, but it's ruder than Doctor Who in that it has swearing and naughty stuff I think. As for dark, I suppose it has a few things in common with Angel in that they all would get together and go and defeat some monster bloke (but it's ruder than Angel) and I'm not sure it's as dark as Angel (it has scenes shot in daylight so it's not literally dark like Angel was)

But if you're only watching through Netflix, and going into the franchise cold, RENT THE ORIGINAL WHO. You've no excuse not to. ![]() (And if you're already a Tom Baker/Peter Davison/Patrick Troughton/etc. fan, believe me, you will not find anything to love about producer Russell T. Davies' overbearing gay-pop-cutesy incarnations.... Neato Special Effects are not enough to justify what he does to the series over three years.) |

I rented Torchwood on Blu-ray, and I quite like the show, but don't feel any inclination to buy it, watching it once is enough for me. Also, it was shot with digital HD cameras, so the quality isn't very good compared to something shot on film then scanned. The Blu-ray isn't artifacted like the truly dreadful versions they show on BBC HD, but it's still pretty soft with visible smearing which may well originate from the digital cameras used rather than temporal filtering applied afterwards.
I agree with the earlier comments; Torchwood is darker and more adult than Doctor Who, and I found it more reminiscent of shows like Buffy and Angel in style. Also, John Barrowman is from Glasgow, his American accent that he uses for the Captain Jack character is fake. You can hear his natural Scottish accent if you can find a way to watch the recent documentary about him that was on BBC called "John Barrowman : The Making of Me". |

Barrowman, born in Scotland, spent several years as a youth and teenager living and going to school in America, before returning to Britain where he starred in London theater for several years before moving on to British TV. The show is more sexually ambiguous than Dr. Who, I believe. Captain Jack is certainly the main focus of the series and he's certainly sexually ambiguous himself--which I like.
I enjoyed the series quite a bit, but you really have to start at the beginning. A co-worker is the one who told me about TORCHWOOD. She's 60 and really loves Barrowman as a vocalist and actor, and she does not normally like any kind of Sci-Fi at all, but she does enjoy TORCHWOOD. The one thing that I have noticed is that the Blu-ray versions of each season (S1 is still available for preorder in Blu, but the preorder of S2 in BD has been withdrawn, for now, it seems) are only a few dollars more than the SD equivalents. I might still doubledip and buy S1 in Blu--the episode where Jack returns to the past (WWII) is my favorite episode. I'm sure my co-worker would be happy to take my S1 SD off my hands if I did buy it in Blu. |
