Default Quick general onkyo receiver question...

I'm housesitting for a friend who has a couple year old Onkyo 602 receiver. His stuff is wedged in a stand pretty good so I cant pull it out to look at closer. Looks like he has his cable box and blu ray player audio thru digital optical cables. When select shows are on the Onkyo display shows a DD Dolby Digital indicator... but when watching 5.1 dvds and blus it only says PCM, never a DD 5.1 indicator... Is this normal or is there a chance he hooked something up wrong... p.s. I put the receiver on direct sound so theres no effects or anyhitng... Thanks

You need to go into the player options and switch the audio output to bitstream. This is most likely the problem you are having right now.

For straight Dolby Digital is it better to select Dolby Digital listening mode or Direct listening mode?

Ok, i gather Direct listen will bypass any room adjustments or effects u had added- Is there a way on Onkyos to turn up the rear speakers besides changing the distance setting?

I don't know about that particular model because it's a bit older, but on the newer models, you can adjust the volume independently for the mains, center, surrounds, surround backs, and subwoofer. It's done in the setup menu. Changing the distance setting is not the best way to get more volume from any of your speakers.

It will be the "level" or "speaker level" setting - should be somewhere in your setup menu.
