I have a new theater i am building, i have the Epson Powerlite 6100 projector, and i am looking at a 120 to 123 inch screen. i like the vutec and draper screens becuase of the velvet border. can any one help me with the gain, manufacture to go with. The theater room is a dedicated room in the basement so when the sconces are turned off there is virtually no light.

Here is some info on screen gain (and then info on the Draper M1300 material), most manufacturers offer screens with velvet borders and my only experience has been with Elitescreens, and Stewart. The bit of advice I can offer is to get test samples from each and do your own in room testing. I would project your image on a flat white wall for the time being, get samples from as many screen makers as possible and see what looks best to you (you may snoop further into these boards on how people make their own for a fraction of the cost). Personally I liked the screens at a gain of 1.3 and below, anything more was too bright and reflective.

120" wide or diagonal? 16:9 or 2.35:1?
The Epson is a pretty bright projector-- 500 or so lumens at economy lamp in best viewing mode and 1500 or so lumens at economy lamp in brightest mode. Add 25% for high lamp mode. I would probably stick with a unity or 1.3 gain if you've got complete light control. However, if you are planning to use a 10' wide 16:9 screen, that's a fair amount of screen real estate. At best viewing mode, you would get 11.5 fL at economy lamp and just short of 16 fL at high lamp when the lamp is new-- you will lose light output as the lamp ages. This is not bad brightness, but some folk prefer 20 fL or more for a more "punchy" image. If so, you will either need to use a brighter mode (at the expense of picture quality) or consider using a higher gain screen. Personally, I think you would be fine with a unity or 1.3 gain screen. Are you planning to use speakers behind the screen? If not, then a solid screen would be fine. Here are a variety of screen manufacturers in no particular order: www.stewartfilmscreen.com www.elitescreens.com www.carada.com www.dalite.com www.smxscreen.com www.seymourav.com and, of course, the Vutec and Draper you mentioned. Unity gain solid screens are pretty generic and similar amongst the manufacturers. Hope this helps! |
