Default Problem with my receiver

Hey guys I have a Sherwood receiver not sure the model# I'll look it up when I get home. It has worked great for me for almost two years now. About a year ago I had a system selector sitting on top on the receiver and after about 30 mins into a movie when something loud would happen the receiver would shut off. It was very hot to the touch, I moved the system selector and it worked great again. Just moved into a new place and forgot about this and after I set all my stuff up sat down to watch a movie. The same thing started happening. Is it like a safty feature when it over heats and I'm just an idiot for doing it twice or should I be worried? Thanks

Make sure your receiver has proper ventilation. It could be a safety feature for when it over heats and for when you drive the amps into possible clipping alone, yet at that temperature. If you are tight on space, I highly recommend Antec's AV Cooler.

I think I was wrong about overheating. It did it again last night during Gran Turino. It would be playing fine and then as soon as something came through the back speakers it would shut off. So I did the Test tone to see and yup front left, center, front right, then bam shuts off. I then rewird the speakers and now it goes through the test tone fine even at max volume. Could having speaker wire touch cause this? Do you think I fixed it mabey.
