I saw this theatrically and once on DVD and that was enough for me. Besides I read about in the Bible at least a few times a year.

IMHO Gibson's best film is Apocalypto.

I'll be watching The Passion of the Christ on Friday, followed by The Ten Commandments with family and friends on Sunday. I still haven't decided what to watch on Saturday.

for fear of getting banned for discussing religion, I’m gonna make this short and to the point…..it's not the crucifixion that is celebrated @ Easter, it’s the resurrection.

Everything that happens in Passion of the Christ leads up to the resurrection on Easter Sunday.

and i seem to remember hearing/reading somewhere that Gibson based the violence on what the Romans did back in those days.

How bout this instead?

Although some of it is hollywoodized, its a very accurate representations, and Phil Caracas acting is just superb!

Right, so why watch a film that bathes in violence and torture? Just because it has a happy ending? I just don't see the relevance to watching this movie in order to celebrate the resurrection.

But hey, if you enjoy it, more power to you.

Talk about igniting a firestorm!

I'm planning to watch The Passion either on Easter Weekend or the week after.

that's where the 12 years of catholic school come into play and can't be discussed here.

The Resurrection happens because of the crucifixion. The reason Jesus went through that is the point (at least for Christians). And instead of sanitizing it like previous movie depictions, it depicts it more accurately and therefore is more humbling for those of us who have certain priorities in life.

Nor can the iconography between the two divisions (the Catholics depict a guilt-inspiringly bruised-up Jesus on the Cross, while Protestant iconography depicts an empty Cross where Jesus isn't anymore) displaying the two fundamental interpretations of the ROLE of the Crucifixion...
Suffice to say, we know where this movie stands.

Watching a Hollywood made film depicting the violence, torture, and crucifixion Jesus 'experienced' has nothing to do with priorities in life.
