Please combine if there is another thread, but I thought it would be cool to list some films that you maybe disliked or hated when you first saw them, or maybe just didn't get them, but you, for whatever reason, chose to give them a second chance and ended up loving them more and more with each successive viewing. And maybe give a little summary of your initial reaction and the hows and whys of how you ended up loving them. I'll start…
Princess Mononoke - I was only 12 when I first saw this and I was not accustomed to such violence in an animated feature so I really did not like this one at that time. Spirited Away came out a few years later and I loved it dearly which then prompted me to seek out other Miyazaki/Ghibli films to watch and in turn give Mononoke another chance. I was older, though not necessarily wiser, and I thoroughly enjoyed it on second viewing. It grew on me even more over time. A.I. Artificial Intelligence - Oh yes, I went to see this in the theater with my dad and a friend of mine and I now have to believe that their opinions kind of clouded my own on this the first time out. We all agreed that the first act was aces pretty much up until the dumping of David and then, for my dad and my friend anyway, it went downhill fast and never recovered. Even for me it was a bit of a drastic change in tone and pace that came seemingly from nowhere. However, I ever so bravely gave it another go on DVD when it was released and I fell in love with it fully and never looked back. It is now one of my favorite Spielberg films. And quite possibly one of my favorite films of all time. Moulin Rouge - Watched this on DVD with my dad for the first time back in the day when it came out. So weird and out there and over-the-top that I just couldn't let myself into it and my dad certainly couldn't. However, once again I gave it another try on my own and ended up loving it. So there are three films, each as different as can be, that I did not care for on first viewing, but by some shade of awesome I ended up loving them after giving them each a second chance and time has been very kind to all of them. How about you guys out there? Any stories? Last edited by spiderfan1985; 09-25-2015 at 01:08 AM. |
