Thinking about building one for my theater room. Could use some ideas.

Well, mine is not a bar as in "stand behind it and serve alcohol and drinks to your guests" but, as a slightly different idea... I built my own "bar counter" to use in my second row seating of the theater itself - I had a 6 foot scrap piece of white formica kitchen counter a friend had given me, sprayed the white formica with a very dark grey textured spray paint for reflections, and then used 2x4's, 1/4" oak plywood, and oak trim pieces to frame out the counter piece and put it up on legs. I stained the oak a cherry color, and then later found three 25" bar height leather and solid cherry chairs selling locally on Craigslist - they were over $400 each new, I got them for $90 each from the seller! They match the counter well; I think it all turned out fairly nice for someone who was just using power hand tools with no woodshop. It makes a real nice food and beverage counter for my guests sitting in the back row...

I really like what you did and I might do something similar. I will still need a cabinet or armoire to keep the liquor and glasses, etc, in. But I do like how this expands the seating area while also providing perfect spots to eat while you watch.

Yes, I have a kitchen cart in the snack-bar area which I use one of the cabinets underneath for liquour and glasses. The nice thing about that bar seating for the second row is that the higher seats in the rear make a natural raised eye-level for the people in the back, rather than having to build a seating platform for the rear row to look over the heads of those in front. I don't have the room to use a platform anyway, as the ceiling in my basement theater is only 6 1/2 feet high, too low for guests to step up on a platform.

I provide folding snack tables for the guest in the front row, to sit next to or in front of them for their food or drinks...

Default Build a BAR! You wont regret it

I have a custom bar and am very happy with it. My dad is a cabinet maker and it was his gift to me.. (pics in my HT gallery)

The size and geometry of the room will be an important factor in determining what size and style of bar you end up with.

Not to mention your budget...

Good Luck

I know this is not exactly what you were looking for but I hope it helps with the thought process. When I am at that stage of the game I'll do some more research but this site seems to have pretty much everything you need.....

Not a great pic, but I built mine with glass block with
colored bulbs behind it wired to light switch.
Looks real nice it's different and you don't
have to worry about shoes kicking it.

My theater room had a bar from the 50s in it, but I really don't need one. So I converted it into blu ray storage and display for my monster props.

Yup.

It'll look something like this:

http://www.houzz.com/photos/5158738/...-san-francisco

Except that it won't be enclosed and the end where the chairs are won't be raised but at the same height as the other counter and have a waterfall effect for the quartz countertop.

The backsplash will also be metallic, and the cabinets likely glossy (modern looking).

Will have a beverage center on the back wall, and a wine fridge on the front counter area.

Those shelves look like the ikea cd/dvd wall rack that I think sell for $6 ea. Can't seem to find it on their website so it is either discontinued since I was there a couple months ago or in store only.

Well, my own is not a bar as in "stand behind it and provide liquor and beverages to your guests" but, as a a little bit different concept... I designed my own "bar counter" to use in my second row sitting of the cinema itself
