Default HD-DVRs & eSATA drives

Has anyone setup DirecTV HD-DVRs with eSATA drives to increase recording capacity?

No, but from what I have read, it should automatically recognize it. I was looking at a couple 2TB ones when I first got my HD DVR, but have since stopping looking into them. Its been okay so far for our needs.

Keep in mind that it doesn't add to your existing HD, it replaces it.

Yeah I've been reading up on it for a few days. We're at that point on our HR21 [90% used up] where we don't wanna delete anything and its primarily because the stuff that's there isn't on blu-ray yet like Star Wars, Gladiator, Stardust etc. I'm gonna give it a shot with a WD 2TB My Book eSATA drive, if it doesnt work I'll prolly get a barebone HD encase it in an Antec MX-1 and give that a shot. The DirecTV website does have suggestions but they're all 1TB each.

I put one on my Tivo HD. Even though it was pre formatted set-up seemed to take forever but once it did its worked without a hitch.

Just remember that you will either need to power the eSATA drive off or unplug it completely. I have read where some HD-DVR's will not recognize its internal hard drive even if there is a drive connected but unplugged.

Bizarre sounding, but it may be true.

Yup...one needs to unplug one drive and reboot inorder to play the other one. Now I need to see if there are any 2TB drives in the market that are compatible with my HR21. From what I hear DirecTV has not endorsed the usage of any drive over 1TB.
