First off this is not intended to start a flame war. This is something I've never understood and I mean to pick some brains and find answers.
I read many, many posts here from people saying how they hate Digibooks and other cases besides the standard ones. Enough that I finally have to ask why? Is it really because they look different on the shelf? Because every season of TV show (minus the few exceptions) comes in something other than a standard blu case and some of you that are so against the digi's have TV shows in your collections. For that matter many of you have steelbooks as well, which are not standard blu cases either yet no one is wishing steelbooks away, in fact many are clamoring for more. So I guess it's mainly the digi-books that people have such a problem with. Me, I like them, I like that they come with that little book about the movie. I own Falling Down, Matrix, Amadeus and Shawshank in digi and like how they stand out. Granted I have Band of Brothers, the Discovery Atlas set, True Blood, Nature's Most Amazing Events, all the available Bond steelbooks and others that don't gel with the plastic cases either so it's no skin of my sack at all. I just want to know why so much hatred towards them and not every other release that comes in the non-standard package. Seems inconsistent at best to me, or at worst like people are pissing and whining for no reason whatsoever. Case fanatics I beg you.. shed some light. |

lol..hahahaa i think it's same as the "used or new blu-ray" question. It's a personal thing. I personally don't care. I am not going to make such a big deal over a case. I totally agree with you when you say that some just whine and moan for no apparent reason.

Now there's a detailed response...
"I just don't like them" Sounds like my 4 year old daughter trying to explain why she doesn't want to go to bed yet. "Because I just don't" Is there a particular reason you "just don't like them"? Last edited by SonOfArathorn; 07-10-2009 at 05:20 AM. |

No, I just don't like bananas either...is that wrong some way? It comes down to personal taste, I was just trying to be honest, that does not mean someone else cannot like them...

I don't dislike the steel books, digibooks or the TV show style cases (John Adams as an example). But I don't want them in my collection. And wont buy them until I can transfer them over to either normal cases or 3 disk case or a 5 disk etc. Its just my preference. I'm not picky like this with anything else other than my BD collection. Not sure why and cant really explain it.

While I have no problems with digibooks, I think the issue comes down to the cases are taller and deeper than regular cases. It seems that most here (myself included) like there shelves to be uniform.
Most people have all their digibooks, regular cases, TV episodes, and steelbooks in their own, separate areas. Some even have their box sets on their own. Same with movie with slipcases. It all comes down to preference, some members are just more...vocal about their preferences than others. |

The reason why digibooks are disliked by many is the fact that they are taller and wider than normal cases.
Yes, I understand that many tv series and box sets are also different sizes, but typically only their thickness is affected. I have a blu ray shelf that fits the movies perfectly, so I cannot stick a digibook in it without the risk of damaging the top and bottom. Plus, the movie sticks out like a sore thumb because of the wider case (caused by the binding) as I said before. I can understand how some people couldn't care less about this issue, but just because it doesn't affect you doesn't mean people are crazy for thinking this way. |

Thank you guys for not immediately getting on the defensive. I hadn't even thought about custom shelving, aside from the digi's I have a few others, Discovery Atlas and NMAE off the top of my head, that wouldn't fit on a custom shelf.
I guess I also just assumed everyone alphebetized their collections A to Z, never thought about niche sections and things like that. |

Sometimes the same studio will also end up switching the kind of cases they use. I've noticed several times on even the same titles.

I don't like digibooks for two reasons, for me they are not needed, all these pages on the movie I will never care to read and it's an excuse for stores to sell it at a higher price because of the extra stuff that's added.
It's the same reason why I don't like the box set releases like Casablanca or Wizard Of Oz, full of stuff I don't need or care about at a much higher price. So I don't buy them. |

But even VHS wasn't standard. Some had the compressed paper sleeves, some had plastic shells. The Disney ones in particular had a unique shell. And those Disney ones... it's like they were intentionally designed so that they'd become heavily damaged if you didn't handle them well. So long as different studios are behind this stuff, things will never be consistent across the board (even "standard" cases are far from standard). Height consistency between most normal plastic cases and the book cases would be nice, but it's not a big deal. It's a shame for people who can't fit the extra centimeter of height the book adds, but frankly, I'd just say that's their fault for making their shelf require such a tight fit. With such a tight fit, they must not even be able to fit a lot of boxsets or slipcovered cases in there. |

I bought my shelves originally that had the perfect spacing to hold BD cases before Bonnie & Clyde came out. Digibooks DO NOT FIT IN MY SHELVES!!
