Default Need help building my HT

Hi,

P.S the pricing of my equipment is in canadian money

I'll be finishing my basement soon and I'm making a room for my HT which consist in a Pioneer Receiver VSX-9130 TXH-K With(THX select 2, 130W per channel 499$). My speaker are the C-Series of Energy bought at the price of 1100$)

2x C-500 front Speakers
1x S10.3 Subwoofer
1x C-C 100 Center
4x C-100 Surrounds

The only thing I don't have yet but will be my next pruchase is a Plasma TV, probably a 58inch Panny.

Now to my questions, my room will be 14.5 foot by 14.5 foot, I will make a false floor to have a better sound comapred that is I would be directly on the cement.

Q.1 What kind of floor should I put on my false floor?? Carpet, laminated, Vinyl???

Q.2 Ive seen somewhere that speakers(surrounds) sholdn't be place too close of the wall. Is this true if Yes How can I place my surrounds if they are bookshelf speakers??

Q.3 Is there a good, best way tom place your speakers in a room to have the best sound possible, if so can someone tell me how I should place mine given that I have writen how big my room is.

Thanks alot in advance for your answers

A.1 Carpet

A.2 It depends on how the speaker is ported, what it's designed for, etc... they make ones specifically for hanging on the wall, but otherwise, I'd say "Use Stands"

A.3 Use an SPL meter to calibrate your system.

"Bonus Answer" That room is screaming for a projector

Q. to A.1 Why a carpet

R. to A.2 thanks they are bookshelf so probably good to be on walls

R. to A.3 thanks again

Bonus answer I know but the projector that I wanted was too expensive, just the projector and the screen would have cost me around 5000$ if not more so.....

Carpet because.........

It will absorb more sound, have less echo in the room etc... It'll make fine tuning the audio that much easier.....

You want to hear the audio while in the sweet spot, as you're watching the movie.... you don't want to hear it after it reflects off the floor.... and you don't want it to "hang around" after you've already heard it.

Also... when you see those high-end 2-channel audio rooms that people build into their homes (or off of their homes) and you see hardwood floors, with a small area rug in front of the equipment or seats etc.... you have to keep in mind that those rooms have $5k+ in acoustic room treatments.... Those rooms are just insane!

You said it was a basement.... what type of walls does it have? Already framed up etc?

And as far as bookshelf speakers..... they aren't always supposed to be on walls or in enclosures.... (that's why many manufacturers refer to them as "Monitors" ) I wouldn't be too concerned with it though.... If it were your Fronts/Center then I'd be concerned, but you should be O.K. with them on the walls..... I have one of mine on a wall, and one not.... It's just proof that you sometimes have to cater to the limitations of the room (or in my case, protect the speakers from being damaged by clumsy people )

EDIT:

I don't know component pricing for where you are..... but usually a Screen and entry level 1080p can be had for $3,000-$3,500 and I'm sure that T.V. you're looking at isn't gonna be cheap!

Well the TV I'm looking at is 2 300$ plus taxes, I live in Canada BTW If I would buy a projector it wuold be one I saw for the image that sells for 3 500$ and the screen 106 inche + is around 800$ so with the taxes it will cost me 5000$ so compared to my TV I save 2 700$ which I can use to finish my basement.

.
Any carpet will do.... nothing "special" although you can buy ones with a Cinema theme if you're into that sort of thing.....

Well, there are wall panels specifically made for sound proofing the room etc... a little more cost, but if it's going to be a dedicated theater, it'd be nice to spend the extra coin and be prepared for the future...... Also, you'll want to run wires in the walls, and not just the ones you need now, but "Extras" and perhaps an outlet, HDMI, etc. in the ceiling for a future projector...... you'll want CAT5 and HDMI, along with speaker wires etc..... It's a lot easier to do it now than to fish wires through the walls later.

HERE is a good thread from AVS........ it's good to learn from other people's mistakes...
