Default So I started my new job...

Been there a less than 2 weeks but things are going well. It feels great to back to work after 5 months and the people all seem great.

I work in sales at Herd International, we make bush/bull bumpers (integrated animal protection) for Tractor Trailers and super duty pickups.

What's pretty cool is if you go to the scene in Transformers 2, where the decepticons land on the ocean freighter to fix up Megatron, you'll see Mixmaster, the cement truck. On the front of that bad boy you'll see a product made by Herd for this movie. It's a beefed up "Big Tex" bumper. Our logo can be seen in the center of the bumper towards the bottom. The bumper can also been seen just before Devastator Tranforms but it's not as close up.

Sure is unique condsidering we're a couple thousand miles from Hollywood.

Interesting update. I know someone earlier had posted a thread about an annoying co-worker in a cubicle next to him. I know he'll love this one.

It turns out our sales manager wants to stagger shifts for coverage. 1 person working 7:30-4:30, 1 person 8-5 and 1 person 8:30 to 5:30. After a brief discussion between the 3 of us in sales, it's clear no wants to work until 5:30 every day.

I come up with what is the only obvious solution (the same one you've all probably come up with by now) and suggest we rotate shifts bi-weekly or every 4 weeks. With a little bit of a complaint about getting home 6:30 when working until 530, employee B in the group agrees and we cc: our sales manager with the arrangement. Can you guess where this is going yet!?

Our manager agrees with the plan and all is good, right? WRONG!

While I'm gone for lunch (me being employee A), employee B tries to sway employee C to both go to our manager and suggest since I work the closest and get home quicker...I should be the one works until 5:30. No rotation...just me. Of course, employee C realizes that's ridiculous and chooses to not get involved. This prompts employee B to email our sales manager on their own and try to convince them that it makes sense that the closest in proximity to the building should work the latest shift...especially since employee B plans on moving out of town in May, and when that happens they'll be getting home at 6:30!

GIVE ME A BREAK...so anyways, at 4:30 our sales manager let's all 3 of know that for the time being, we're all working 8-5. Don't you find it pathetic that an employee would have to bother a sales manager with something this petty?

Oh ya, I've got 1 roll of canadian pennies for the first person to correctly guess the genders of employees B and C with accurate justification!

I actually don't blame employee B. If they agreed to the rotation thing, it was probably because they wanted to be agreeable rather than confrontational, but upon further thought, realized they didn't want to do the rotation.

Who knows what their outside situation is, but maybe they have reasons why they don't want to be away from their house until 6:30.

But I think B at least owes it to A and C to say that, instead of deviously going to the manager.

Wish my job was a democracy. The manager should just tell you guys what you're working and be done with it. Senior person should be allowed to pick. Guess I'm just used to being under the thumb of The Man.

Ok, I disagree!:P

It doesn't matter what anyones situation is like outside of work. You have to be fair to all 3 employees. I could get into details on proximity, marital status, and the # of children we all have but none of that should have any bearing oh who works what shift, assuming we are equal in competitancies...which we are.

To think for a second that anyone employee deserves preferential treatment becuase they don't live close to work is outlandish. Does she deserve to earn more in salary too...to help pay for gas?

We all got our job offers and all signed up knowing there were different shifts and in our initial round table between the 3 of us, we discussed our own reasons for not wanting to work until 5:30 everyday. My reasons are just as important and valid to me, as theirs are to them.

The rotation was the only thing that made sense. Now that's been taken off the table and the other male co-worker is laughing because her devious action has eliminated us for now...from getting to leave at 4:30, and he'd rather be 8-5 everyday.

Both of us were trying to be fair so I'd love to understand how anyone can justify that a rotation where 3 employees work 3 different shifts is unfair.
