Talking FX Enters 'Outlaw Country'

Interesting.........FX is making some serious plays to add a lot of shows to it's network schedule over the next year or so. This makes about 5 new shows that I'm currently aware of that have yet to premiere but are on their way.
Quote:
Keeping with the theme of organized crime, Outlaw Country is described as “a crime thriller/family drama set against the backdrop of southern organized crime and Nashville royalty where music and love, hope and tragedy collide.” Deadline reports that Steenburgen has signed on to play a country music legend, a role which will require her to belt out a number or two.

The marital screenwriting team of Josh Goldin and Rachel Abramowitz scripted the pilot and will handle showrunning duties alongside David Manson, who is returning to FX after his work on the 2006 miniseries Thief. Art Linson and John Linson (Sons of Anarachy) are on board as executive producers, while singer/songwriter Shooter Jennings should lend some legitimacy to Country in his role as executive consultant and music supervisor.

I'm going to be brutally honest here. I hate just about every show that has starred a lead actress, so my hopes are not high for this show.

I can understand that, I couldn't name a single show I've watched that was lead by a female that I actually enjoyed. I have no idea why that is, it just always ends up that way. The only show on FX I don't like is Damages so this could end up being exactly like that for me, a none watch. Not to mention Shooter Jennings being a part of this, he's a sellout and a hack. He ain't country and he never has been, he gets by on his last name alone. If Shooter Jennings is real outlaw country I'll kiss your ass.

I've been looking forward to this and hell, Shooter Jennings is the main reason I am. Shooter makes music that he enjoys, whether it be country or otherwise. When I think of a sellout, I don't think of one that would release a country/industrial album in 2010. I read an interview recently that he said he writes music that he enjoys and tries not to worry about the fans, because the reason he has the fans in the first place is because he made the music he enjoys. Personally I think that the "Black Ribbons" album is one of the best of the year. I do have to say on his first album he kinda relied on his dad's name a bit too much, but since then he's been Shooter.

Veronica Mars was the shit. As was Buffy. But those are the only two I can think of.

I'm very behind the idea of a female lead show.

I've never found Shooter to be genuine. I don't believe anything he writes or sings. I am a die hard country fan and the people I listen to are definitely of the alternative style, but Shooter is a lot more Trashville mainstream radio friendly "country" which I just won't listen to. But we can debate who is and isn't country and the current state of country music and nashville, but this isn't really the place for it, lol. Cause if there is one thing I am truly passionate about, it's real genuine country music. And I could get into a very heated debate over it. I just know that in my vast underground and alternative country collection, no shooter album will ever be found.

Well this project has evolved a lot in the past twelve months since this was first announced, especially in terms of fantastic casting. Because I do not remember any mention of the always incredible John Hawkes or his involvement as "a big-time player in the Southern crime world". Between Deadwood and Winter's Bone, Hawkes has solidified my support for him and I will see anything he does from now on. Stephen Root is always a joy as well. I will definitely be checking this out now.

Quote:
Stephen Root has been cast as a new regular in the FX drama pilot Outlaw Country, which is undergoing tweaking and some reshoots directed by Adam Arkin. The crime thriller/family drama, set against the backdrop of Southern organized crime and Nashville royalty, stars Luke Grimes as twentysomething Eli Larkin, who tries to leave a life of crime; John Hawkes as Eli's uncle Tarzen Larkin, a big-time player in the Southern crime world; Haley Bennett as a country singer; and Mary Steenburgen as her overprotective mother. Root, repped by Gersh and Grillstein, will play Jack Folcum, a shrewd businessman gangster associate and rival of Tarzen's.
