Default PS3 /aircard question

I'm thinking about selling my pc, getting a laptop, and switching to an AT&T 3G aircard.Right now I'm on Hughes satalite which blows chunks, but it's the only thing I can get in my area.
I'm wondering if I do that, what are my options for getting online with the PS3?
Will I have to get one of those usb drive things, download from the laptop, then take it to the PS3?
I know at&t offers a usb version of the aircard, would that work in a ps3 too?
Thanks for any help.

As a person who uses and sets up aircards for folks here at work... don't expect too much. They blow. If satellite isn't too hot for you, you may want to look into wireless networks- there's a few rurally here in Wisconsin and Illinois that people use that aren't too bad.

Anyway, you could enable internet connection sharing on the laptop and connect to it either via a router or whatever. I really think you'll be unhappy with the performance though and would recommend other options.

Yea, I hear what you're saying, I have the aircard for my work pc, and as slow as it is,it beats hughes, plus no fair access threshold crap.
What are the network options you spoke of?

Are you asking me about wireless internet options or internet connection sharing (ICS)?

if your laptop has an ethernet connection and you receive your internet via wireless, you can bridge the 2 and have an internet connection by hooking your PS3 into the network card/ethernet.

i suggest purchasing a router that you can plug the aircard directly into. as i recall they are not very expensive. ICS can be a hassle to setup and get working. With the router you just use wireless networking or plug all ur pcs/ps3 vie ethernet just like any other router. I have an att 3g card and performance is mixed. since you will be using a fixed location, maybe look into an external antenna, and or cell amp if u need it, maximum signal strength will help, but quality of connection will also depend on the load on the cell site you are connecting to. Iphone users have really choked the network in some areas. I'm still willing to bet you get a little bit better service than satellite.

Wow, I didn't know they made a router you could put an air card in.

here is an example of one from a quick google search. I think i saw a 3g router at my local Fry's electronics store for less than $100

although if you are thinking of gaming with this connection forget about it, if only downloading updates, ps3 store content, will be ok.

That's ok, I didn't either.

Looks like these guys jumped in and answered your questions. I'm curious to see what you end up with and how it goes for you. Good luck!

Hi guys. I also live out in the "boonies" and have (and hate) wild blue satellite internet. Would a Yagi directional antenna pointed to a 3G cell tower be a viable option with a 3g router for my PC? Would I hard wire it into my PC via ethernet cable or make my house a "hotspot". Thanks for all the help. Dan
