That price range? You'll probably make out with about a 32" LG or Bravia.

My vote goes to Sony Bravia, but also look at the Samsung as well. I also believe he can get a Vizio for around the $400 mark.

I have an LG that I love, but I helped a family member pick out a TV and they had the same price range as you have given here. We picked up the 42 inch 1080p Vizio. The picture is great in HD and surprisingly good in standard definition. I think the total was under $600 and that was with an extra two year warranty.

blu-mike you failed to mention how it died. Simply stop turning on? Puff of smoke? Sound but no picture?

I suggest a good UPS to protect the new TV from power surges and transients. Those power fluctuations can really damage stuff over time and usually are not detectable by casual observation.

My 13" Panasonic TV was plugged in a quality surge protector and ran 18 years before being replaced in 10/07. It still works great, it simply was replaced.
