I'm not so certain about Sony Pioneering Blu Ray. They certainly have a big input into it, but there are many other companies heavilly involved. This seems to be one of the first projects where a combined group resolve problems e.g. TDK and the surface protection, JVC and the DVD / BD combined disc and the list goes on, but Sony is certainly in the middle of it

Please note: the Double Layer DVD recording technology comes from the Blu-ray Disc technology

Does that mean that every double layer DVD produced gives part of its profits to the BDA?

blu ray technology was started by a small company in japan. I actually read a piece on a scientist (I don't remember the link) who claimed to be a pioneer of a blu ray and he had an interesting story on how it all started. He said after university, Sony offered him a job but he stayed in a small town where he grew up to raise a family and was employed by a startup with little capital. Anyway they discovered blu ray sometimes in the 90's in their lab and after sometime Sony and I think Philips bought their patents

Yes, he did. There was a big squabble when his employer refused to pay him bonus for his discoveries and he sued them for millions $$$ and won and then he went on to teach in university.
