Lights flicker and dim. Footsteps sound from a sealed-off attic. Mysterious events only vulnerable young Paula sees and hears make her fear she’s losing her mind — exactly what treacherous spouse Gregory hopes. Directed by George Cukor, Gaslight shines as a superb exercise in suspense. Ingrid Bergman won her first Academy Award®* as Paula, doubting her sanity while clinging to it. Fellow Oscar® nominee Charles Boyer skillfully plays against type as smoothly evil Gregory. Joseph Cotten, Dame May Whitty and an 18-year-old Angela Lansbury in her movie debut (also capturing an Oscar® nomination) help make the Victorian era vividly realized through production design that earned an Academy Award®.

I'm impressed. A pre-1950's title that's not a genre film.

Hopefully it sells enough to get more classic titles out.

Finally! Been waiting on this one for a long time. In regards to Ingrid Bergman, hopefully we'll get Rage in Heaven, Saratoga Trunk, & Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde from WAC next, I believe those are the only remaining dvds with her I'll need to replace after this one.

It will be a while before it hits the 4/$44 sale. But it will eventually.

Hell yeah. About damn time. They told me on FB a while back that it needed a new transfer, and I’m glad that finally happened.

The 1940 version is a nice inclusion too, although I wish it was in HD. I’m not surprised it’s not though given Warner’s treatment of Mystery of the Wax Museum as an SD bonus on House of Wax’s Blu-ray in addition to the alternate cuts of Strangers on a Train and The Big Sleep.

It’s at least a suspense thriller though, and kinda fits in a grey area near horror and noir. It reminds me a lot of the films Hitchcock did with David O. Selznick like Rebecca and Notorious (also starring Ingrid Bergman). So no, not technically a genre film, but not too far away either.

A shame it’s SD as the BFI did put it on Blu with a booklet and propaganda shorts by the director.

I don’t think I’ll make it to the sale. That’s how excited this cheap old bastard is for this one. Thank you WAC!

Now we have an official reason to argue if this film is part of the Noir cycle or not... just kidding, don't hate me.

This is a fine film and it'll be nice to see it in HD.

That's interesting. Wonder why they didn't license it for blu-ray? This certainly seems like something that would have been a good fit for them. Maybe Warner didn't want to give it up, though I'm not sure how they make that determination at this point considering what Criterion has released vs. the abundance of titles Warner are still sitting on.

In either case, just nice to see it coming out. I think I prefer WAC releases anyway since I'll probably get this for $11 - not sure Criterion would add anything (though for one thing, they may have insisted on the 1940 version being HD).

They started the WAC with a nice collection of golden age stuff. Last number of months has been slim pickings.

Glad to see one I actually want added to the fold again.

We want more!

So, there's a Blu-ray of the original 1940 version available in the UK, but Warner are only offering US viewers an SD version? Huh?
