Default Newbie gaming question for PS3

OK so I haven't bought a video game system since my parents got me a Super Nintendo when I was a kid and now I've been playing the Lego games on my PS3 and I'm addicted again.

Here's my question:

I used to always love to play adventure/role-playing games on my PC when I was younger and preferred them to action games like Castlevania/Contra etc.

I loved Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island, the adventure version of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, etc etc. Anything where you could pick up items, talk to people, ask questions, use items, etc.

Is there anything comparable on the PS3 to get? It seems like all the games are heavy action/war/racing games.

And if not, what should I look for on a PC if I've been out of the gaming loop for more than a decade?

THanks all!

I believe Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is the answer to your question. I haven't played the game myself but from the video reviews I've seen, it is a very extensive RPG game. The price for the GOTY edition (Game Of The Year) is US$29.99 at Amazon, which includes the additional maps on disc.

This is also my top recommendation for you based on your stated preferences. Oblivion is a sprawling fantasy RPG and you will probably dig it. The developer of Oblivion (Bethesda) also recently released Fallout 3 which I think is quite good. Fallout 3 features the same open-ended RPG gameplay as Oblivion but it is set in a post-apocalyptic future and has more of a gritty sci-fi tone than Oblivion.

If you like Indiana Jones style adventure, I would highly recommend Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. If you are into platform games at all, check out Little Big Planet.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I'm going to see what I can pick up from Gamestop with their B2G1 sale.

Question: what's the difference between the two editions of Elder Scrolls? What are the maps for?

there not really maps but extra content. they add a location on your map and give you more missions. shivering isle also has unique weapons, armor, creatures and so on. the goty edition has the extra content with it and the other edition doesnt but you can get the 2nd disc seperately later if you wish

if your interested in fallout 3 also play oblivion first.

Not necessarily. I hated Oblivion and its wretched leveling system, but I absolutely love Fallout 3.

Folklore is a very good action/adventure game with a deep atmosphere and fun combat

Prince of Persia is more a platformer than an adventure game but the storytelling is great and the graphics are incredible and plunge you in a new world

I agree that Oblivion, Fallout 3, Uncharted, etc are great games that might be right down your alley. Another one is Tomb Raider: Underworld. I'm playing it right now and i love the puzzle aspects of the game. Graphics are decent and Lara Croft is hot!!

Do all of the aforementioned games have battles in them or are any of them "just" strategy to reach the end? That's more of the type that I prefer. God, I feel so old...

Maybe I should just go replay Space Quest or Leisure Suit Larry!

Oblivion, Fallout 3, Folklore, & Uncharted are all great suggestions for your preferences.

For sheer hack and slash fun - you may try Heavenly Sword if you can get it for around $20.

I borrowed it from a friend and loved it. But still not willing to pay over $30 for it - too short a game.

And as far as which edition of Oblivion to get - save your money and buy the plain one. If you get into this game - the standard edition can easily occupy well over 100+ hours (I went over 200) - so do you really need the extra content for the extra $25 or so?

Strategy, I guess you'd call them.

They were always known as "adventure" games on PC. See previous choices above.

You might like Untold Legends its a lot more linear then oblivion and has a designated end, if you get my drift but still a hack and slash rpg..

Any more games come out?

I know Leisure Suit Larry came out and I'll be picking that up. As a style, that's right up my alley. I also knowthat Maniac Mansion is supposed to make a come-back. It would be great if more of these types came out. I'm not really a fan of open-ended games or ones that combine action and the adventure style that I'm used to.

Any more suggestions?

It's not out yet, but you might want to keep Heavy Rain in mind for later on.

Yes, if you're an adventure game fan, we've been having some nice reminiscing over here:

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=106616

Heavy Rain looks phenomenal, and comes out next year. I have Folklore and enjoyed it immensely. I'm looking into Blue Toad myself.

I played Oblivion on Xbox 360 and really liked it, but couldn't bring myself to finish it.

Heavenly Sword is a good one. It's an action game to be sure, but it has a really slick story and very good animation.

Oblivion is an amazing fantasy RPG that is well worth $30 for the Game of the Year edition. You could easily spend hundreds of hours playing that game. It's one of my absolute favorites of all time, easily.

Fallout 3 is kind of similar to Oblivion since it was made by the same developer. It's an excellent RPG as well. The leveling system is a lot better, but for me Oblivion had a better setting with tons of people, forests, mountains, swamps, cities, etc. to explore, whereas Fallout 3 is just a giant bombed-out wasteland. Oblivion also has a larger map, and more missions. Still, Fallout 3 was my favorite game of 2008. Just not quite as memorable as Oblivion.

For pure strategy, it doesn't get much better than Valkyria Chronicles. You may have a bit of a harder time tracking it down, but it's totally worth it.
