I got the TC-P42X1 My parents had gotten one a few weeks ago and i loved theirs, go this one and reccomended it to my brother who got a 50" version! Alot of people on here/avs mentioned they use the cinema setting with some tweaking... but for my room/tastes I enjoy Vivid with some tweaks and I'm gonna do the 100 hours fullscreen method for the most part...

Brighter settings will age the phosophers faster. Some people do this during break-in.
Try setting your Cinema settings at around 70-80 for contrast and 50-55 for brightness and see how you like it since you want a brighter image with more pop. It's the best setting on the Panny plasmas. It preserves a very accurate image with less noise, distortion, and more consistent blacks than the other settings. Also, setting the color to "warm" is best. It may take a little while to get used to, but it's the best setting to use. Vivid is really not good. Standard or Custom are much better than Vivid. If you must use one of the more "pop" settings, use one of those two. |

I recommend that if you keep these kind of unnaturally bright and forgive me, but garish, settings that you turn the pixel orbiter under the anti-image retention menu to force every 1 or 2 minutes.

I have a Panasonic plasma (as stated in my sig) and I believe every thing I've read about them is that the Cinema mode (or THX mode in my case)is the most accurate. Vivid is way out there with tons of settings messed up, then custom and standard have more gamma issues than Cinema. At least that's what I found when I was researching other TV's (before deciding on this one). |

The issue isn't how it looks in your room, we have no concern about that. They are merely suggesting that you turn on the pixel orbiter option in the settings so as to mitigate the potential issue of image retention and burn in which can be aggravated by the settings you currently have. No one is presuming to tell you that you need to change your image settings if you are happy with the image you are watching.

Remember, as long as you're happy, everything should be good to go. But looking into a plasma as a future upgrade, I undertand everything that every has suggested to you. It's just for the benifit that you don't ruin that new set of yours that you just spent your pretty pennies on. ![]() |

There's certain things you may have to disable (like any sort of edge enhancers or noise reducers) and really just winging it by using one of the presets isn't going to work as well as using a calibration disc (which would be good to use on Cinema for the reasons stated earlier).

Congrats on the new tv!
If you decide you like or need brighter settings because of your viewing environment, be a bit careful during the first 100hrs. ![]() Yes, vivid and higher contrast settings on other picture modes will age the display quicker, but if you are watching content with static logos and black bars during this time it is possible to cause uneven wear on the display. Remember that it's during the first couple of hours the display ages quicker so enjoy your tv but with some caution. Full screen hd programs and Blu-rays are great if you don't intend on using a slideshow break-in. Planet Earth and channels like Discovery HD Theaters are excellent. Thanks everyone, I tried more cinema, to the point where movies started looking good, but shadows got to be too much, SD tv, didnt look good, cartoons didnt look right, and its too dark for games, but my PS3 is my blu ray player too so i cant assign a seperate input. I did some research and found out alot of the Cinema settings work best after claibration and/or service menu tweaks. I'm happy with Custom, but I turned things down and added some tint as well. I'm watching full screen blus and may do the slide shows.
