Default Gladiator audio discrepancy?

Maybe I'm screwed up but isnt Gladiator on dvd presenterd in DTS EX 6.1 ??? Then Why would paramount release the blu with only a 5.1 master???? seems weird to me? are they down mixing the audio?

yeh,me to.however theres been different releases on this title.
the first one was dts es 6.1 and dd ex.after that the next release was dd 5.1.my guess is paramount is using the dd 5.1 and mix it dd true hd 5.1.since paramount releases are true hd except startrek season1 and top gun[dts] this doesn't surprize me.

hmm... I've got the DTS 6.1 DVD....is there a compelling reason to ditch 6.1 on the blu-ray in favor of 5.1?

more important question: you have the dvd and you want to know if there's a compelling reason to ditch it for the vastly more stunning and equally if not better sounding bluray...

easy answer: yes!

Oh I'll be upgrading for sure , I'm just wondering why they didn't include a 6.1 audio track on this new blu release

It's a fantastic movie, I'm hoping to get the steelbook if the extras are not PAL specific

Gladiator was released theatrically in Dolby Surround EX, with the matrixed rear channel. Hypothetically all you have to do is engage your 7.1 mode and you should be good to go

Yeah, but why the down mix to 5.1 if the original mix was 6.1??? 7.1 mode as your calling it won't be a discrete mix like the DTS ES on the dvd is. Paramount needs to remaster teh audio on this one and give us a master audio 7.1 mix on this not 5.1. if i wanted 5.1 i would have stuck with the damn dvd but even thats got 6.1!!!!

The Blu-ray presentation will include both the original theatrical version of the film as well as the extended version in 1080p High Definition with English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, French 5.1 Dolby Digital and Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital, as well as English, English SDH, French, Spanish and Korean subtitles.

Taken right from this website the specs on gladiator blu-ray 5.1 master audio is good but damn it I want some 7.1!!!! All my money went for a 7.1 AVR I want 7.1 especially for Gladiator!!!!! I freakin love this flick!!!

As far as I know, there is no 6.1 lossless audio codec. Only 5.1 and 7.1.
I guess they think that not everyone has a 7.1 system.

Correct!

But this soundtrack begs for rear center. I remember on the 6.1 a part at the beginning scene when a hatchet came thrown right at the camera and went over head with the sound to match. It was fricken cool!!!

The original mix was 5.1. The extra channel was matrixed. DTS made the extra channel discrete for the home video release.

Personally, I'll take lossless 5.1 over lossy 6.1 any day of the week. I'd also take the original 5.1 mix over a poorly done, fakey 7.1 mix also.

Can someone explain the difference between 5.1, 6.1 and 7.1 ? ^.^

EDIT: OH and what is "loss less track" ?

Same here. It's been too long waiting for this one to release on blu that I'll be perfectly happy with a 5.1 lossless track.

5.1 means 5 surround channels (speakers) center, left, right, left rear, right rear and .1 is your bass. 6.1 adds a rear center and 7.1 adds left rear center and right rear center or something like that.

The box will probably say 5.1 but perhaps there'll be an ES flag for the dtsma track since that seems the way people are heading instead of a true discrete 6.1 track (evidenced T2, WALL-E and some other films).

Just give me the lossless codecs in 5.1...it's all good for me! Dolby PLIIx, THX Surround EX, THX Select2 and my personal favorite THX Ultra2 all do an incredible job of matrixing 5.1 to either 6.1 or 7.1. Just activate any of them over the lossless codec and you're seriously good to go!

I stand corrected.

I just did a search and found the following results.
Crank - PCM 6.1
The Descent - PCM 6.1
Dirty Dancing - PCM 6.1
Godzilla Final Wars (import) - (Japanese) TrueHD 6.1
King of New York - DTS-HD MA 6.1
Kitaro - (Japanese) DTS-HD MA & TrueHD 6.1
Saw 4 (import) - (Japanese) TrueHD 6.1
Saw 5 (import) - (Japanese) TrueHD 6.1
Shinobi - (Japanese) TrueHD 6.1
Sukiyaki Western Django - (English & Japanese) TrueHD 6.1
Terminator 2 (Skynet) - DTS-HD MA 6.1
Top Gun - DTS-HD MA 6.1
Wall-E - DTS-HD MA 6.1

There might be even more. I only searched for NA and Japan.
