Default Unable to play Watchmen on JPN 60GB PS3

Watchmen (US Release) on my Japanese 60GB PS3 is completely borked. I've now gone through 3 copies and none of them have frakkin worked.

First copy was really laggy, sound cut off, but would keep playing at like 4 fps.

Second copy froze about 3 minutes in, if I could get it to recognize at all. 90% of the time I'd either get error 80029914 or "This movie cannot be played" or "This is an invalid disc."

3rd copy does the exact same bloody thing.

My other BLUs run just fine, as does the bonus disc...just the disc with the freaking movie craps all over itself.

Anyone else been having problems?

Yeah, I have ver 2.80, the latest version available for me.

I did find out the problem though....the system just shitted out. Watchmen was the harbinger of death. The system is now fully dead and refuses to read any BLU discs period. No movies, no games.

I'm going to call Sony tomorrow and find out what I can do. I'm expecting them to not be able to help me at all, since I'm in the US and have a JPN system. If that's the case, I'm gonna disassemble the thing and try cleaning off the lens.

I'm in the same boat except I have a launch 60GB JPN PS3 in Europe. Sony Europe is willing to fix those but they charge for the repairs (repairs + possible extra cost for shipping parts from Japan to Europe, since only Japanese models have the Emotion Engine in their architecture).

So far no problems with my PS3 (knocking on wood) but I've just ordered Watchmen (US) so I can't confirm yet whether or not it causes problems. As soon as I get the disc, I'll let you guys know though that could take a while (ordered from Deep Discount, out of stock and shipping internationally on top of that)

Well, that's one person that's not watching the Watchmen.

Yep I agree. These are the exact symptoms I had when my laser asembly started dying. And it played other discs fine initially, but then the symptoms got worse and appearded on more and more discs.

Mine was an imported model and out of warranty, but a local PS3 specialist replaced it faster and more cheaply than Sony's out of warranty repair.

I also have the JPN 60GB PS3, but I have no problems with the Watchmen BD.
