had an interesting and very informative conversation with Ken Lowe of Sigma Designs and what he had to say about the next-gen DVD format war blew me away. But first, a little bit about Sigma Designs and why this man’s opinion should matter to those of you on the fence. Sigma Designs’ media processors work with both standards and currently power six of the nine Blu-ray players available on the market today including Sharp, Sony, Panasonic, and Pioneer. He’s not playing favorites, just telling it like it is.
Maybe I’m being naïve about the whole format battle, but I didn’t think that an end would be in sight for quite some time. I will concede and say that I’m wrong. Ken looks at it like a game of chess. Blu-ray is picking off HD DVD’s rooks one by one and their King is about to be ‘mated. If HD DVD is able to make a significant move within the next 60 to 90 days then they might save themselves, but the holiday season will determine the winner, says Ken. Cutting the price on HD DVD players just isn’t going to cut it. He also tells us that the PC market is playing a bigger role than first expected. What’s the one thing we always desire in our PC/Mac? More space, right? Blu-ray offers 25GB on a single-layer, 50GB on a dual-layer and HD DVD can only muster up 15GB and 30GB, respectively. HD DVD is dead, people. Blu-ray is the clear champion and you better straighten up or you’ll be wasting your money. But if you’re like me then you won’t be making your next-gen DVD purchase for quite a while. Shall we sit on the porch with a cold beverage and see how and when this battle will turn out? http://crunchgear.com/2007/06/27/int...d-dvd-is-dead/ |

lets be honest the HD war isnt even that. Its a massacre! ! ! ! We the true Blu fans have always known that our choice was the wise and clearest one. The soul of HD-dvd is having a heart attack. In the words of Samuel Jackson. When ever some one asks me about HD-dvd ill say:"yes i know what it is and i hope they all burn in hell" lol

The only way I see HD-DVD pulling this out is:
1. If they start selling their movies for half the price of BR disks (fat chance). 2. BR owners suddenly wake up to disk rot on more than just a few of their titles -- scaring people away. 3. Toshiba starts giving away one free ticket to Pattaya, Thailand, with any HD-DVD purchase. ![]() |

yes, holliday season is reasonable date of finishig hd dvd crazy cow, and of course pc/mac segment is very, very important (for example, pc users enjoy upscaling of sdvds for a a long long time... i am pretty sure pc will have soon some advantage even with a BDs comparing to standalones)...
but i don't understand why everybody forget the biggest thing of all: people, there's a bd player that plays a lot more than movies... it is, or better to say, it will soon be a kind of real personal computer... games that are gonna be played on it will look incredible by today's standards, it is fastest, has one of the best pictures, it is completely future proof, it is the cheapest choice, hardware is monstruos compared to anything else on the market... it is ps3, with the power yet to be unleashed... what hd dvd machine can compare to that, even it is given for free? even more, death of hddvd means almost immediately the death of xbox360 unless MS make a BD supplement or whatever... nevertheless, good point, it is nat a war, it is massacre... |

Typically in format wars what happens is there is a neck and neck period and then one side gets a toehold. When the toehold is big enough that consumers SEE they have a toehold, then it just explodes. I think BD is either already at that point or quickly approaching it. THAT is why I bought a PS3.
