Default SO they totally screwed up 'Edward Scissorhands'

SOME SAY one of the most celebrated movies of the past millennium got a mediocre BD release, featuring a lackluster PQ filled with grain and flickering.

Hopefully, they'll get this one re-released in the future to come.

Anyway... are the reviewers right?

Tell me a valid reason for this. Hopefully, they'll get this one re-released in the future to come.
Well considering the film is made up of grain, that didn't bother me. I also didn't notice the flickering you're talking about...

the review:

Video
3 of 5

Edward Scissorhands is presented in a 1080p transfer encoded in MPEG2. Unfortunately, the transfer is somewhat disappointing. For the most part the video is clean, but at times can be unstable. The transfer is almost schizophrenic: compare the opening scene with the end: even though they are the bookends of the film (Grandma & the child) the opening is marred by heavy grain and noise, and the end scene is fairly clean and much sharper. During the story itself, grain is natural, but extremely heavy in some shots, especially opticals. Miniature and mattes appear even more artificial and unconvincing. Colors are bright, but can appear oversaturated at times with some noise. There is also some instability and flicker, a good example would be pretty much any dining room scene. The fireplace behind Adam Arkin almost appears to be projected, the flicker is so noticeable. I have a feeling this is in the source: the same flicker appears in the trailers. The sharpest, clearest scenes are actually the flashbacks with Vincent Price in the old mansion; those scenes are filled with rich textures, detail and depth that are missing for the majority of the film. There are no noticeable compression artifacts or edge enhancement. Overall, it’s better than the DVD but not something you’d want to show off your HDTV with.

As opposed to the future in the past?

Fox Mpeg-2 BD-25 release has me thinking this was an early Blu that got delayed when Fox went on hiatus waiting for BD+

Personally, I avoid almost all MPEG-2 BD-25 releases. This film, its stars, and its director are popular enough that I think we'll one day get something better.

This disc isn't that bad. But yeah its not a demo disc. I would say its an upgrade over the DVD though.

Here is an excerpt from High Def Digest's revew:
Quote:
I did have some minor issues that were more stylistic than technical -- the darkest areas of the screen are occasionally crushed, visibility is often limited in the shadows, and a handful of exterior scenes seem overexposed. I also noticed some scratches, flecks, and noise that seem to go back to the original print. Still, for the most part, these slight blemishes weren't a big deal.

The one major problem I encountered is a bizarre, chronic shakiness that was also present on the two most recent standard DVD transfers. I'm not talking about camera shake -- I'm talking about a consistent wobble in the picture from beginning to end. The result is similar to being in a theater where a loose reel is causing the picture to noticeably tremble. Why this problem has been overlooked for the third time now is beyond me. Fans with large screens will find themselves staring at the vibrating houses and shifty faces that populate this unstable transfer. For my own part, I had a difficult time concentrating on the merits of the transfer -- although the image looks incredible when paused, it always feels disjointed when it's in motion. This single problem came close to ruining the entire experience for me.
So if the same problem occurs in three generations and "no one notices," either A) its intended to be there or B) its part of the source elements.

Of course, it could also be present on the other generations. I'll have to find my VideoCD, Laserdisc, and a working VHS player just to check but is it really worth all that hassle? No.

Edward Scissorhands is Tim Burton's most personal project, it lead him to do Ed Wood (because of the mirrored relationship between Wood & Lugosi and Burton & Price). It was also one that Burton had to be careful with since he wanted to focus on the the dangers of suburbia but not be biased against it.

Will there be another release? Sure. In this market of free trade, why not? Could it be any better? Video and audio wise, not really. Extras, maybe but the same extras have been on every DVD and were ported to the BD nwith nothing "new" or "fresh" since 2003, I doubt Fox would even try.

I tend to think the "problems" described in various reviews are evident in the source elements, and are not necessarily due to bad transfers.

To be honest this title looks fine, and many scenes actually look great. I own it, and the look of the blu-ray never detracts from my ability to enjoy the movie.

It may be an average transfer (I actually rate it above average), but it's hardly "totally screwed up". I question whether the OP has even seen the blu-ray himself or is simply complaining second-hand.

Second-hand. Since it's one of everyone's fave movies, they could have put much more effort into doing this but... whatever.

So you've never even watched the disc and you're complaining anyway?

How are we to take your criticisms seriously if you don't own, or have never watched this blu-ray?

i think you are hyping up this movie a lil to much, personally i cant stand it, and it is far from one of the most celebrated movies of any time period, it wasnt even nominated for best picture.

I don't know if it's BD25 but Transporter 1 Fox release sucked. It was too soft.
