Default The Halt (2019, Lav Diaz)

Quote:
It is the year 2034 AD and Southeast Asia has been in the dark for the last three years, literally, because the sun hasn’t shone as a result of massive volcanic eruptions at the Celebes Sea in 2031. Madmen control countries, communities, enclaves and bubble cities. Cataclysmic epidemics razed over the continent. Millions have died and millions have left.

Lav Diaz goes sci-fi. Very interesting political take on authoritarianism with government control, drones and even an epidemic in the middle of it. It was filmed pre-Covid 19, but the flu connections are somehow surprisingly similar to reality and its a kick in the gut to the political climate in Philippines, both before and now.

I saw it on MUBI and it's still available to stream there in a couple countries.
