The extra useless things you speak of are usually on the blu-ray disc, the time it takes a player to load it varies upon what type of java interfaced material is enclosed on the disc. That being said your best choices for a player with no fuss would be either a PS3 or the monster we call the OPPO BD player!

You're about to get bombarded with everyones favorite player. With that said I have the Sony S360 which doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles. It has BD Live functionality which is standard for a 2.0 profile player but that's about it. It plays movies very well so far and Sony is pretty good at coming out with firmware updates in a timely manner for those movies that you'll eventually come across at one point that won't play. Something Samsung isn't good at.

So now you've heard from one of the Oppo and Sony people so it won't be long Panasonic, Pioneer, Samsung, etc. fans will chime in.

Well let me be the first trumpeter of Panasonic then. I own the DMP-BD35K, and I love it. It decodes all the audio you will ever need, plus upscaling is pretty amazing. It is a little slow to load, but definitely not as slow as some at this price point (I bought mine for $267 on Amazon a while back). It is BD-Live capable, but doesn't have anything I would call extra useless stuff. At the time I purchased it (October 2008), it was the only standalone BDP with Cnet.com's Editor's Choice pick.

I have to chime in here, this is a very poor Player it does not play any of the recent Blu-ray movies. Have you tried to play "The Haunting in Connecticut?" These guys say you have to disable all the features in order for this BD35 to work. I say it has a Mickey Mouse set up, look to another Company. Check the Panasonic Threads, people are very upset with these Players.

I own the Sony BDP-S350 and it has played all the Blu-Ray discs I have and rented, no skipping or freezing of picture has happened yet. It does have the BD-Live feature but I don't use it myself. As long as you update the firmware this is a reliable player, of course it's my opinion.

I'lll say Samsung, Momitsu or Oppo are better. Because US Sony players, including the PS3 don't play any discs with 50hz content.

I bought the Sony S360, too, for just these reasons. I wanted a reliable Blu-ray disc player. I'm not interested in streaming a movie that is not up to par with Blu-ray. The S360 has performed like a champ.

The Magnavox's that can be had for $100-$130 at Wal-Mart are a steal. I've put in over 60 discs, some known to have issues in other players, and it plays them all flawlessly.

I will say either Sony or OPPO...

Sony for there great firmware support and OPPO for just being a better player in general with excellent firmware support also...

You choice really.

One more vote for Oppo. It plays every disk I've tried and the DVD upconversion is probably the best there is. I don't need all the useless crap either, just the movie and usb to update the firmware.

So far this forum has been pretty good of allowing someone to voice their opinion without some schmuck getting personal, at least as far as I've seen. I love Apple products too despite their DRM madness but you're almost guaranteed to get pounced on when you say their product is better than someone elses.

Yeah, I have a Tivo and Apple TV that will stream but don't use them for that purpose. They have a ways to go to get to Blu-ray PQ & AQ. I'm sure that by the time they get to a comparable level and the bandwidth is available in my area the equipment will be obsolete.

Pioneer 320 does not have any of the streaming stuff, plays discs reliably, and has a better apparent build quality than most of the other players. It is a bit slow at loading (does this really matter?), but I got one and LOVE it. PQ and AQ are considered the best in this price range by many, and the upscaling of SD DVD's is excellent. PM me and I can tell you where to get one for <$300 shipped.
