They will need to do what was done with the Original series because of the way to special effects were done. If they were to release them like that, I would rebuy all seven seasons on Blu-ray. Sorry for those who disagre but Next Generation was and stil lis one of the greatest scifi show in TV history

Yeah I mean, it's sort of talked about in the other thread, but basically to do this right they would need to:
1) find the original film footage for every episode, no idea how easy this would be, but perhaps not that hard. Physical film = can be made HD; the NTSC video final edits, not so much. 2) remake every effect shot, which were edited onto SD video. And I mean, that's a lot...everytime they used the transporter, fired a weapon, etc. 3) on the BDs, give you the option of watching the episode with the original effects shots upconverted, or the option of watching it with new HD effects (like the new TOS sets I believe)... of course the non-effects shots would be in HD because they were from film. It would be so expensive and time consuming. And I'd be worried that like, considering the amount of effects shots in each episode, what if they changed the way the transporters or phasers looked or something, thus pissing off fans, but also gave certain other things like exterior or planet-orbiting shots a good upgrade? It might make more people want to stick to the upconverted-effects episodes, which, as I say, would contain a lot of potentially distracting upconverted footage. I wouldn't actually be surprised if they JUST went the upconvert-for-the-effects-shots route though, because of the expensive of all the new effects they would need to create from scratch. I'm counting on the DVDs to be 'definitive' for quite some time to come. I'm most wanting DS9, for me the pinacle of the franchise... TNG was fun and groundbreaking in its way, had some great episodes/films, but suffered from some pretty poor seasons, meadiocre episodes right up until the end, and a few underused/underdeveloped characters (especially the female characters, but also Geordi as well). To get The Best of Both Worlds and All Good Things in full sparkling HD, would be marvelous though! Paramount do like to pimp the franchise, so who knows... maybe we'll get some compilation discs with a few select episodes in HD? |
