That receiver will not work for the new audio codecs. What is your budget? I would stay away from HTIB as they limit what you can do. If you want entry level receiver look at the Pioneer. Here is the link.

And for speakers, try these.

It's my understanding from your other thread that your maximum budget for speakers is $300....correct?

If so, here are a pair of Klipsch Synergy F1's for $299 on sale at Best Buy. I would strongly recommend that you start with this and not some 5.1 system for the same amount that you will only want to replace within a few weeks.

Take my word for this. The HT experience can be very much enjoyed with a good 2.0 setup. In a few months, add a centre channel or a subwoofer and then the rear surrounds after that.

I'm not an expert on AVR's, but since he is using a PS3 as his Blu-ray player won't the PS3 internally handle HD codecs as long as the PS3 is set to PCM?

I think the OP has a limited budget and I just want to make sure that we get him on a decent path for now. I believe his entire budget is no more than about $500.

Yes. But, that AVR only does HDMI video switching. It doesn't process audio over HDMI and requires a separate connection for audio.

He would have to move up to the 465 model which can be had at 6th ave right now for $250 which is a steal.

Got ya! And the PS3 doesn't have analog out, so in order for him to get the codecs he needs a better receiver? I know there's a unit one can buy for aroud $130 that fixes this apparently? But then he may as well buy a proper receiver.

Thanks BIslander

You may be better off getting things in pieces. You will be happier in the long run. Others can guide you as to what to purchase, but you could start with the receiver and possibly get the L & R speakers. Then when you could afford it get the center followed by the rear 2 speakers.

I agree with what others have said -

You'll be a lot happier in the long run if you buy piece-by-piece, versus getting a cheaper 5.1 setup that will only keep you satisfied for a short while.

Start with a couple and just keep adding when you get the chance.

I agree with both you guys. I wanted instant gratification with my previous 2 systems(Bose acoustimas 16 and Def tech pro cinema 1000) but eneded up selling them because I was not happy with them.

Ditto, though my system pales in comparison to yours.

You're hearing a lot of people telling you not to buy it all at once on that budget for a reason. Many of us did the same thing as you and we turned around and sold it within 6 months or less in some occasions. I strongly recommend you look around a bit and maybe make a game plan to spend $500 now and $XXX amount of dollars in 3 months or whatever.

If you STILL really want to go with it all at once, the Polk RM6750 set is another option at around $199 or less.

I would say no, you will just have to upgrade this in the next year or sooner, i don't think you will be happy with it.

Look at the specs tab on the weblink you posted. It describes HDMI as a video switcher, which almost always means it doesn't do audio over HDMI. Check the manual. It will likely say a separate audio connection is required when using HDMI. AVRs that cost $179 won't do HDMI audio, as a rule.

That unit lacks bass management and distance adjustments. I suspect the lossy DTS core and DD 5.1 tracks at 640kbps over optical will sound better than lossless through a box like that.
