I lost my PS3 and Directv box this past Saturday by a direct lightning strike. I live in a townhouse and my neighbor got hit (blew her ceiling out in the room the other side of the wall from my home theater). I lost almost everything that was plugged into that wall on all 4 levels of my place.
I also lost my Denon 2307. Everything was plugged into my Monster HTS 3600 MKII. A surge protector will not protect against a direct lightning hit. Surprisingly, the TV is ok. I verified that my PS3 will not output video via HDMI by hooking it to my parents system. I took their blu-ray player and verified that my TV is accepting video via HDMI. The Denon will power on but immediately goes into protect mode. Time to order upgrades ![]() |

I'm really sorry to hear about your bad luck. I would also check with Monster first. Isn't why you bought the HTS 3600 MKII in the first place? It doesn't sound like it the did the job Monster claims it will do. Anyway, if they leave you hanging, I hope you have homeowners/renters insurance. It sucks having to pay that deductible, but it's a lot better than having to replace all that gear at full price.

My sister lost a bunch of stuff some years ago due to a squirrel getting in the power transformer.
A hefty Uninterruptable Power Supply is good because the the lead batteries can absorb lots more shock. It will kill your batteries but they are cheaper to replace. |

Good luck trying to get that approved by monster. It was a lightning strike and even though it was next store it's still a lighting strike and not a surge. I would call you're insurance company

Remember these are surge protectors designed to protect you're equipment from power company surges not lighting strikes.

Did you try your homeowners insurance policy? Even in townhomes, they typically cover this sort of thing with a moderate deductible. It's worth a perusal of your policy.
My mother-in-law had a lightning strike at her townhome in FL a few years back that caused a house fire and the insurance company covered everything, 100%. My wife and oldest daughter were visiting her at the time, and the insurance company even replaced all of their luggage, clothing, etc. and paid to put everyone up at a hotel until repairs were done. |

Same here. If they hose the OP on this one, it will just be another reason to avoid Monster at all costs, but I can't find anywhere on their website on in the owner's manual where it says this model will protect against lightening. Both of the models I've owned (not Monster) specifically stated they would protect against lightening strikes. I doubt they could really support that claim, but as long as they say they can then that makes them responsible for the equipment hooked up to them.

If that is the case then go for it. If it ever happened to me I would just call my insurance company because even though they say they will cover it I'm sure there are some BIG hoops to jump through. I am curious what they will say.

Note: Years ago I worked retail for the Big Red Plug and learned that with surge protectors and other power equipment, read the fine print about your warranty registration.
Monster used to have (not sure if they still do) a clause which read you must register your product within 3 days of purchase or warranty claims were forfeit. Our Monster rep explained it was their way of (a) amassing large amounts of people to send direct mail advertising to, while (b) squirming out of warranty coverage on technicalities. Since then, I've always registered pretty much all my electronic purchases the day I get them. Might be overly cautious, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. |

Before this is over Monster will probably try to sue the OP for something ridiculous. That seems to be how they operate.
