Facebook DTS Answer

So I am a fan of DTS on Facebook and I posted this on their wall

So some of us on Blu-ray.com are arguing over the soon to be released Gladiator on Blu. Why are you going 5.1 when you already have a 6.1 mix available ?

Well they answered with--Trust us, if it was up to DTS, EVERYTHING would be in 7.1.

Perhaps the 6.1 mix was a remix created specifically for DVD whereas the lossless 5.1 mix is the original studio/theatrical mix.

So I have asked on one or two different threads if anyone has entered the contest on the DTS Facebook page. I must be the only one. Since there is no interest, mod can close this now.

To be honest, I don't even know why people need more than a 5.1 mix for home viewing. Sure, there are those people that have big theaters in their house or huge areas where they watch movies. But, most people watch movies in small to moderately sized areas. 7 speakers running really doesn't benefit them all that much when the area isn't that big and the speakers can't even be spread out.

It was either a mod or a reviewer who said that the 6.1 mix was created for DTS theaters, not DVD. So it is odd we're not getting a 6.1 mix on Blu. It makes the DVD truer to the source.

The DTS thing on Facebook sounds cool, but i hate Facebook. Too bad they don't have it on their official DTS site.

Ah, okay. Well, in that case, it's definitely weird. Maybe it's a misprint then.

There is no such thing as discrete 6.1 sound in theatres (in this case at least). The extra channel is matrixed for both Dolby and DTS which is what you'll have to do with this mix. Simply enable EX/ES and you'll hear the mix exactly how it was in theatres (well... better than in theatres actually...)
