Default Samsung BD-1600 with Onkyo 550 reciever

I just got the BD player and connected everything with HDMI and optic to the reciever and for some reason im only getting DTS. I though i would be able to gether true HD or dolby EX running through my 7.1 reciever. Is there something i missed when i set it up?

Why did you hook up an optical cable when you're using an HDMI cable? Maybe I'm misunderstanding but you're running both cables to the receiver correct? If so then I'm guessing it's defaulting to the optical cable for audio. Remove it and assuming your receiver decodes these formats set the player to bitstream the audio.

I see it now, 550. I can't seem to find this model on Onkyo's site, is this a HTiB system? I don't any experience with these systems so maybe someone else will be helpful.

i can try to help. so it seems like ur receiver is not capable of sending both audio and video thru hdmi. fiber optic cant give u dolbytrue hd or dts hd, it has to be hdmi only. so mayb upgrading ur receiver might be the best bet.

yea that i understand but when u run the BD player i dont get the option of the dolby d or EX like my xbxo does, id be happy with that since it sounds pretty good....unless the DTS is has better sound quality and can run 7.1.

i usually have me receiver to auto so it detects the best form of sound for me. and dolby or dts its jus a matter of what bluray movie is capable of giving you not an option.

I believe I found the manual for your receiver and it appears to have analog 7.1 inputs which would give you the TrueHD/DTS HD but unfortunately the 1600 doesn't have analog outs. So it's either get a different player with 7.1 analog outs that also decodes these or upgrade the receiver. In your receiver I assume you set up the DVD input selector to the Optical input your using. After doing that and setting the player to bitstream you should have the other 5.1 formats.

so since my reciever doesnt have full HDMI and just pass threw whats the use of me hooking up the HDMI cables directly to the reciever and out to the TV, when i could just run all the HDMI cables direct to the TV and then optic from the BD player, xbox and DVR to the reciever? Is there gonna be a difference?

The advantage is that you can leave the TV on the same input for all your video and let the receiver do the switching. Going direct to the TV you would have to select the right input on the TV and then select the component on the receiver to get your audio. Just one less step and possibly one less remote.

You might have changed the listening mode for that component. Switch it to the xbox and press the listening mode button on the front of the receiver to cycle through the modes until you get to the one you want. I believe it will retain that setting from then on for that component.

Change your audio options on the BD-1600 to LPCM.

Changing the Blu-ray player to decode instead of the receiver isn't going to do anything for the Xbox.

Your manual states that the listening mode availability depends on the format of the current input signal. When you're cycling through are you playing the movie/game that used to give you the Dolby D/EX? It also says it's not available if speaker set B is on...something else to look at. Frustrating at times yes, but electronics is so much fun!
