Default Oppo BDP-83 as dedicated CD player.

I'd like to downsize my system & the BDP-83 looks like it might fit the bill nicely. My current CA 840C player sounds fantastic but I would give serious consideration in selling it & using the BDP-83 for all my audio/video needs. I'm going on reviews that claim that the analog stage is very good. Even if it comes close the the CA 840's performance I think I'd be tempted to make the switch. Any opinions? Thanks.

Are you going to use the stereo outputs for CD? If so, I think you will be OK, they get great reviews. Some will argue that the multichannel analog outs aren't as good as the Pioneer or (insert high-priced player here), but I can't speak to that. IMO if you have good speakers, you will be very happy with the Oppo. I am, and my speakers are merely adequate.

The DAC's (Digital to Analog Converter) on the OPPO are good but not great.

I would say go for the OPPO, see if you like it or not. If you don't like the analog outs get an external DAC like a PS Audio digital link III or Benchmark DAC1. Another option would be to sent the Oppo out to a MOD company and have the 2ch analog section upgraded.

Hi Phil,

I'd say do a comparison between the Oppo BDP-83 and the CA 840C. Like others have noted, there may be some drawbacks regarding the DAC's, but you're getting plenty in return. SACD/DVD-A, Blu-ray, tec. If you really want an all-in-one player, this is a great unit to own. You can always add a seperate DAC later, if you so desired.

The stereo analog DAC's are a step up from the multichannel analog DAC's, which are themselves quite good. I agree with John - it's worth giving the 83 a listen.

the CA840 is an excellent CD player - i've heard it and i'm not sure the OPPO can match it. But would be very interested in finding out what you decide.

It depends. Everyone is talking about DACs in the Oppo, but they are assuming he will be using analog outs. If you are connecting the Oppo via digital outputs to your prepro or receiver, then the SQ will depend on your prepro or receiver.

Well since he referenced the Oppo's analog stage in his post, I think we all assumed he was going to use it.

Here is what Jeff Dorgay, Publisher of Tone Audio Magazine had to say about the Oppo's 2 channel performance. Keep in mind these comments are coming from a hardcore 2 channel guy.

"Having had the chance to listen to one for the last couple of days, I have to say that while the video portion of the player was very good, the audio section is no big deal. It's definitely a good sounding player in the 500-1000 range, but nothing more.

I think for someone who is putting together a good budget system, this is an excellent player, because it does allow you to play everything - that is highly commendable. This would be a great player to start to assemble a collection of SACD's and DVD-a's, but a decent player a few steps up the ladder will offer better Redbook performance than the OPPO's hi res performance.

Again, for the money, this thing is a swiss army knife, it plays everything fairly well and I think it's more than worth the money as a Blu-Ray player alone.

But it's not a giant killer in the world of digital audio players. "
