Help! My Ps3 Does Not Read Any Discs! - Blu-ray Forum

i went to play tiger woods today on my ps3 but it would not load, i tried 20 times thinking it was the game (because its a rental) and nothing. then i tried my own games and still nothing. then i tried some blu rays and well, you get the point.

what should i do?

i dont have the latest firmware update just yet, could this be a reason?

i even went to do one but it told me it could not connect to the internet

what it does, just to let you know is that it loads the disc into the ps3, then has that loading symbol in the top right hand corner for about 20 seconds and then the symbol goes away and it stays on the main screen with no option to play the game

ive only had the ps3 for 2 months, should i just bring it back?

No. Chances are, the store that you bought it from wont accept it. You need to call sony - they'll repair it for free since its still under warranty. They even pay shipping.

Chances are, your disc drive stopped working. No big deal. Just call up sony (the number can be found in the back of basically any game's instrustion manual. You can also find it by pushing SELECT in the playstation store) and get it repaired. Mine only took about a week.

By the way. If its unrepairable (Like mine was - I dropped it. Long story) then they just send you a completely new console. The problem with that is the fact that you get a new Hard Drive. So yeah, Back up your stuff.

Though, the chances of that happening are incredibly slim since its just the disc drive.

What he said. Call up Sony and them what happened and they will send out a cardboard coffin. I'm currently awaiting for mine to come.

but my internet wasn't working as well...or is that just because i havn't signed up for it yet?

it said it had some sort of DCS error

i've never used it before, i just hooked up an ethernet cable to attempt a system update and i couldnt go on the internet

oddly enough it will only play DVD's

...maybe now someone can help me

is there anything i can do to avoid sending it in?

Sounds like the blue laser went out on you. That's not used to read DVD's but is for BD's and games. You'll still need to send it back unfortunately.

thanks for the reply

will sony send me back my own unit? or send me a different refurb/recon?

i dont think i would be too happy with a completely different unit unless it was brand new, i trust my own refurb instead of one where i have no idea how it has been handled/used in the past

Depends just how bad the ps3 is broken. Im not sure what they do about a non-working laser...

But dont worry - They sent me a completely different system then the one i had. It worked flawlessly. There wasnt a single scratch on it... I honestly thought they gave me an entirely new console untill reading that thats not true.

Again though - dont worry. Its much better if they send you a different console. Newer fans, disc drive, etc. It can all help keep your PS3 alive longer.

I had a simillar problem almost a month ago (my PS3 wouldn't read any disk!!).
So I called Sony, they sent me a box and in about 10 days (there was a weekend involved) I got back the same unit with a replaced drive. It works fine ever since!

But, it all depends on what is really wrong; if it is just the drive, they will replace it. If it's something more general, they'll probably give you another unit.
Just make a back-up of your system before you send it to them!!!

ya i just read about backing up the HDD...i didnt even think about it doing it, especially because of a laser thats out, but i better do it just in case

Sounds like you got a weak laser.

Weak lasers die sooner.

The bane of an early adopter of an optical format. (remember PS2?)

Be happy it died now, rather than right after your warranty expired.

Sorry to hijack this thread but it made me think.

I've had to send back my PS3 once for repairs. The instructions bundled with the box say to put everything in the box (controller, power cable, Cat5 cable etc).

I currently have no idea where the exact Cat 5 cable that came with my PS3 is (I use a longer one), nor do I have any idea where the original controller USB cable is (also using a longer one). What are we supposed to do if we don't have that stuff anymore? Will they still repair it?

why do they need all that stuff? just take my console and give it back

I agree. I guess they want everything to make sure the problem isn't caused by a faulty cable instead of the system itself. *shrug*

It's not reading all kind of disk CD DVD BD or just BD only?
IF it shows disk icon on right upper corner and not reading any kind of disks try to update your software manualy using USB flash because 2 times this helps for 80GB models..

its just not reading BD, it reads dvds fine

im wondering if this has anything to do with a game rental, i rented a game and it was a little scratched up but i put it in anyway and the day after is when it couldnt read BD anymore, should i steer clear of rentals or is this just a coincidence? (its the first time i put a rental game into my ps3)

I had this problem a while back. It would not play anything
then all of a sudden it would play dvds and games but no blurays. I tried mutiple times, for a couple days. I didn't want to send mine back so I backed up the hard drive and re-formatted it. 2 months have gone by and not one problem. It works fine now. It could possibly be a fluke though.
