Default 'Enemy' - Jake Gyllenhaal Times Two from 'Prisoners' Director

Quote:
‘Enemy’: A Double Dose of Jake Gyllenhaal From ‘Prisoners’ Director

This weekend, the pairing of star Jake Gyllenhaal and director Denis Villeneuve equaled the number one movie in the country, Prisoners. Next, the pair will team up again in a story with not one, but two Gyllenhaals. That film is called Enemy, which had it's premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month.

Based on a novel by Jose Saramago, Gyllenhaal stars as a downtrodden college professor who comes to realize there’s a younger version of himself somewhere in the world. It also stars Mélanie Laurent, Isabella Rossellini and Sarah Gadon.

And here’s the description from Amazon:

Quote:
Tertuliano Máximo Afonso is a divorced, depressed history teacher. To lift his spirits, a colleague suggests he rent a certain video. Tertuliano watches the film, unimpressed. But during the night, when he is awakened by noises in his apartment, he goes into the living room to find that the VCR is replaying the video. He watches in astonishment as a man who looks exactly like him-or, more specifically, exactly like he did five years before, mustachioed and fuller in the face-appears on the screen. He sleeps badly.

Against his better judgment, Tertuliano decides to pursue his double. As he roots out the man’s identity, what begins as a whimsical story becomes a “wonderfully twisted meditation on identity and individuality” (The Boston Globe). Saramago displays his remarkable talent in this haunting tale of appearance versus reality.
Buzz out of Toronto was mixed to positive, suggesting the movie has a very distinct Spike Jonze vibe. The A24 pickup means we’ll surely see it next year.

I didnt get a Spike Jonze vibe at all from this. This was the first film I've seen by the director and I surpisingly enjoyed it alot. Really loved the style, the slow burn, and the direction it went in the last half hour. The last shot of the film is one of those sudden "what the f..." moments. I thought Sarah Gadon did a good job in this and I think has the most to do out of the female cast. I was excited that Isabella Rossellini was in it, but unfortunately she has only one scene. Looking forward to seeing Prisoners this week and getting a copy of Incendies, Polytechnique, and Maelstrom.

I might post the Q&A from the premiere. The director and Gyllenhaal were very funny since they knew a lot of people were confused.

This is one of my most anticipated of 2014. And those posters are great! I heard great things out of Tiff too. With Berandal, Grand Budapest Hotel and now this, March should be a great month at the movies.

Is Jake going to blink like a mental patient in this one also?

Love the creepy vibe of the trailer...the cinematography looks just as good as Prisoners, even though it wasn't done by Roger Deakins

Looks great! I too was a huge fan of Prisoners, and this definitely looks like one of the more interesting films hitting this year.

Whoa how did this slip by me, neat. I agree with mrrant_33 about the blinking, what the hell was that all about? Surely that wasn't intentional, was this movie a book and how the character was written, or did he just have a mini stroke?

I want to see this. I'm not going to watch the trailer - I'm completely sold on the descriptions and the premise. Prisoners was amazing, high hopes for this one.

This might be a little off-topic but everyone should check out Incendies; miles ahead of Prisoners in every regard (and Prisoners was incredible).

I really didn't know what to expect from just hearing about what they were trying to do with this film, but the new trailer and poster A24 put out today, well the trailer is new as of today, looks incredible.

A24 is easily one of my favorite up and comers when it comes to putting out good unique pictures. I cannot wait to see this film now.

Here's the poster I'm referring to since I see it hasn't been posted yet -

I completely agree. Movies like Spring Breakers, The Spectacular Now, and The Bling Ring, whether you find them successful or not, probably wouldn't be made without studios like A24. I'm looking forward to Enemy, The Rover, and Under the Skin, all by them this year.

That Enemy poster truly is fantastic. I love the font.
