Thumbs up Old Defective 61" DLP = Brand New 58" Plasma. Thank you Best Buy!

I purchased a 61" Samsung DLP (HL-R6168W) back in November of 2005 from Best Buy with a 5yr PSP.
The TV had been great until about 3 months ago when a 4" shadow appeared on the left side of screen.
The TV was sent out for repair twice under the Best Buy PSP but the repair shop was unable to resolve the issue within 60 days so Best Buy initiated an exchange.

My Wife and I went to Best Buy tonight to see what they would offer us in exchange.
I was bracing myself for some really bad news as I was expecting a 42" Dynex or maybe a $750 credit.

We spoke to an associate in the TV area and we explained our situation to him.
He looked at our original receipt and told us that he needed to check with his manager.
He came back a few minutes later and he led us over to the big screen plasma section.

He pointed to the Samsung 58" PN58B850 plasma that was priced at $4,499.99 and asked us if it was an acceptable replacement.
My wife and I looked at each other and we almost burst out laughing!
We were both trying to act all calm and cool but we were actually as giddy as school girls on the inside.

As soon as we hit the parking lot we high-fived each other and started celebrating like we had just won the lottery.
This is the one time where purchasing the extended warranty actually payed off.

This is by far the best news I have heard all week/month /whatever!!

That is awesome. Though I wont do anything to speed up the event. I have a warrantee product that I would not mind dying cause they are out of business. (52 in Maxent) And if it goes I get a 2000 credit.

Congrats! That was a very heartwarming story! Seriously. I can only imagine how much it took to keep from bursting into tears of joy. Going from a DLP to a top of the line plasma is like trading in your 98 Honda Accord for a 2010 'Vette.

oh yeah....post pictures of that bad boy when you can. I'd love to see it in action!

Really glad you ended up making out on your warranty, OP. I had a similar experience with a GPS unit i bought with a warranty plan (2 year). Ended up getting a high end garmin unit as a replacement! For all the horror stories you hear about these warranties, i think it can be worth the price alot of times!

I guess the big question now is, did you warranty your new 58" plasma?

Yes. I purchased a new 4yr PSP on the plasma and I've been scheduled for an ISF calibration in October.
They were able to take $200 off the warranty price and they added in the TV calibration at no cost.

I know it sounds silly but I was afraid that I would jinx the new TV if I didn't take the extended warranty.

Wow, Zak!

I have seen that TV and it's going to blow you away compared to your older set.
