Default dolby atmos question

I know I'll need a new receiver for this. But, will I need a new blu-a player as well? I have the Panasonic DMP-BDT360.

Nope. The receiver does all the decoding...Your current bluray is fine.

Thanks for the reply. Maybe I'll upgrade when the tax return comes in next year. Since i only have 2 movies that support it right now.

1. Transformers 4
2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

There will be several more Atmos releases by then, I believe the next one up is "Expendables 3." Scratch that... It's already out. Guess the movie made even fewer waves in the marketplace than I thought.

Not only you will need a new receiver, but you'll need to purchase additional speakers as well, to fully utilize Dolby Amos. Adopting to Dolby Atmos, can be quite expensive right now. Maybe after a year or two, the overall cost will decrease.

There is a thread on this topic already here. That is correct, at minimum you need a 9.1.2 setup, but 9.1.4 would be preferred, and that requires both from front and rear elevation speakers or ceiling speakers. See here. The main problem with all this is that there are no AVR's that have that many amp's shipping, so you would need additional amps added to your system. For example a typical Atmos setup would be 5.1.4 or 7.1.2 using a 9 channel amp AVR.

Minimum is 5/1/2.

Just like it is for IIz and DSX.

So...

You could buy an AVR and move the 5/7 speakers to the /2 spot and do...

7.1 or 5/1/2.

My main theatre uses IIz/DSX height for 9.1. Would have bought Atmos this year, but the half-baked 2.0 stopped me.

Holding out for a 4K projector. I used to sell wholesale, and the price for an upcoming 4K(if specs are accurate...and it isn't an E-shifter) falls right into my cost ratio. So...Atmos waits.

I have a Dolby Atmos home cinema setup with 4 in ceiling speakers currently. Tested it out with Transformers 4 and recently TMNT. It's awesome. Plently more titles coming out next year as well...

The atmos mixes on 7.1 are quite agressive. Even if you only have a 7.1 speaker setup you will notice alot more positional sounds. They sound amazing on my 7.1 system. It also sounded amazing on my sister's 5.1 cheapie box system.
Im sure it no where near atmos quality but was a step up with my current system.
