Default Alien: 30th anniversary print (+ Criterion?)

Going to catch it this week...
http://www.filmforum.org/films/alien.html

Check out the credits:
A CRITERION PICTURES RELEASE OF A TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX FILM

Is this weird or is it just me?

Anyway, never seen it on the big screen and am damn excited.

I hate to say this but don't get your hopes up.

Criterion Pictures (a theatrical distributor) and Criterion Collection (DVD distribution) are two completely separate entities.

Criterion Pictures handle distribution of films from Fox for Theatrical showings (as well as many other studios for institutional settings).

They are notorious for sending out the worst, most scratched, splicey and faded prints imaginable. Occasionally a venue will receive a decent print from Criterion, but I've been handling prints from Criterion for decades and the best I ever received (a print of Young Frankenstein) I'd rate a B-.

Head on over to Film-Tech.com and search Criterion and you'll find more complaints about them.

I remember the first Criterion Pictures print I received and I was pretty excited as I had been a collector of Criterion Collection Laserdiscs - boy was my bubble burst - that's when I found out they weren't related.

I'll have to report back after I see it. Apparently, according to the page, it's a brand new print. Not sure why new ones would be struck, as the director's cut isn't even listed on their website.

Thanks for the background info!

Isn't the director's cut of this movie the less-preferred version?

I always confuse Alien and Aliens as to which one has a director's cut the director actually prefers.

ridley scott's preferred version of alien is the theatrical cut. the extended version available has been labeled as the "director's cut" for marketing purposes, but he has declared his favorite version as the one he released in theaters.

aliens doesn't really have a directors cut...it's an alternate cut labeled as the special edition (with restored footage)

I would LOVE to catch this on the big screen. I saw the original Halloween back in 06 when they showed it for 2 days only (I drove an hour) and it was such a great experience. Even though I've seen the movie countless times, there was nothing that could match seeing such a classic on the big screen. It felt new.

I can't even imagine how great Alien would be.

yes, in the commentary for Alien - Scott states the DC is really not a DC in his mind.
